Local Sports: Carlson volleyball tops Jefferson in five

GIBRALTAR – Abby Schenavar saved her best for last.

The senior delivered a huge fifth set as Gibraltar Carlson’s volleyball outlasted Jefferson 23-25, 25-21, 25-23, 16-25, 15-4 Thursday night.

“The difference for us in the fifth set was Abby Schenavar going across the front row,” Carlson coach Bill Henneman said. “By the time she left the set, we were plus-8. She had a nice run in Set 5 and a huge night overall.”

Schenavar led Carlson (2-4) with 20 kills and Skylar Zaranka added 10. Freshman Emma Ferguson rang up 30 assists, 6 digs and 2 blocks in the first home match of her varsity career and Lauren Kline led the defense with 6 digs.

PREP VOLLEYBALL

Whiteford tops Mason

OTTAWA LAKE − Allison Spradling had 10 kills and 24 digs as Whiteford turned back Erie Mason 25-18, 26-28, 27-25, 15-19 in its Tri-County Conference opener Thursday.

Liv Ruehle had (9 kills), Ava Hillard (17 digs), Alyssa Ulery (16 digs) and Alaina Andrews (31 assists, 16 digs) also played well for the 3-4 Bobcats.

Angela Sweeney had a good night for Mason with 20 kills, 19 digs and 25 points. Cameron Zaleksi led the defense with 24 digs. Brooklyn Langenderfer rang up 28 assists and Jenna Wright played well.

Whiteford also won the junior varsity match 25-8, 25-20, 15-10.

Summerfield wins again

PETERSBURG − Summerfield improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the Tri-County Conference with a win over Britton Deerfield Thursday. The Bulldogs won 25-20, 25-12, 22-25, 25-16.

Addy Ciacelli served 19 points and had 14 assists, 6 digs, and 5 aces to lead Summerfield. Kailee LaPlante (14 points, 7 aces, 5 kills, 2 blocks), Sophia LaRocca (10 points, 3 kills, 3 blocks, 3 aces), and Julia Fietz (7 digs, 5 kills, 3 blocks, 2 aces) also played well.

Maya Stone, Addie Spoering, and Riley Soldwish were strong to lead Summerfield's JV team to a 25-23, 25-16, 15-5 win.

Bedford sweeps

TEMPERANCE − Bedford cruised past Ypsilanti Lincoln in three sets Thursday.

Monroe drops opener

ANN ARBOR – Monroe drew powerhouse Ann Arbor Skyline for its Southeastern Conference opener Thursday and fell 25-12, 25-12, 25-18.

Sydney Button led the Trojans in kills and Brynn Reece was tops in assists.

PREP SWIMMING

Allen Park sinks Rams

Lauren McNamara won two events and made two state cuts, but Allen Park got the better of Flat Rock, winning 134-39 Thursday.

McNamara won and qualified in the 200-yard freestyle and the butterfly. She also helped Flat Rock finish second in a pair of relays.

The Rams were runner-up in the medley relay (McNamara, Makayla Kramer, Bella Thomas, Sophia Chan) and the 200 free relay (McNamara Ashlin Woodman, Chan, Kramer).

Bella Thomas was first in the breaststroke, and Chan finished second in the 50 free.

Murphy has big drop

SALINE – Katie Murphy’s 18.5-second time drop in the 500-yard freestyle was the highlight of Monroe’s 149-32 loss to Saline.

“It was fun to watch her hard work pay off,” Monroe coach Erin Dowen said.

Other highlights for the Trojans came from Natalie Synowiec, Delani Willey, Lauren Lahna, and Nicole Rykse.

PREP SOCCER

Schmidtz leads Ida

IDA – Evan Schmidtz scored three first-half goals then added two assists after the intermission as Ida handled Grass Lake 6-2 Thursday.

Jackson Bolster finished with two goals and an assist and fellow freshman Evan Tangler netted the final goal. Grantham Nelson and Cole Blackman also were credited with assists for the 4-0 Blue Streaks.

“It was a whole great team effort,” Ida coach Tim Allen said.

Milan dominates

MILAN – Milan overpowered Blissfield 10-0 Thursday.

Nolan Matley scored three goals and David McChesney had two to lead the Big Reds. Beau LeBlanc, Carter Higgins, Wesley Murphy, and Noah Bussell added goals for Milan, which also tallied one on an own-goal.

Monroe comeback thwarted

Monroe fought back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game, but gave up a late goal and fell 3-2 to Ypsilanti Lincoln Thursday.

Talen Swinkey and Trevor Mann scored for Monroe.

"Finishing is our Achilles Heel this season," Monroe coach Ian Cooke said. "When you continue to miss goalscoring opportunities it’s no surprise to wind up on the losing side in tight games."

Bedford scores early

TEMPERANCE – Bedford took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Lucas Tominello off a pass from Connor Gore, but Ann Arbor Pioneer came roaring back for a 6-1 win Thursday.

Sophomore goalkeeper Caleb Parsons made 25 saves to keep Bedford in the game.

SMCC called off

St. Mary Catholic Central’s game at Lenawee Christian Thursday was called off because of a lack of officials.

PREP GOLF

Dunn the difference

Rylee Dunn was medalist with a 46 to lead Jefferson to a 211-234 victory Thursday over Summerfield at Big Al's Greens and Grille.

Callie Calvin (51), Olivia Peare (56), and Kayce Maitland (58) also were strong for the Bears.

Ellie Noland led Summerfield with a 50 and Mackenzie Ernest shot a 56.

PREP TENNIS

Singles lead Bedford

TEMPERANCE − Vince Cole rallied to win in three sets at No. 3 singles to highlight a great victory for Bedford 5-3 over Dexter.

Noah Kaplan (No. 1) and Jaxon Nejedlik (No. 2) also won singles matches for Bedford, while doubles wins came from Carter Ryan-Taylor Burgermeiser (No. 2) and Zach Wise-Mason Charlton (No. 3)

Monroe tied up

Monroe (1-3-1) won the first three singles flights with Azariah Duran, Hosea Duran and Jack Drougal and also reigned at No. 1 doubles with Christian Koszka-Lombardo and Kyle Pafford, but had to settle for a 4-4 tie with Ypsilanti Lincoln Thursday.

Milan doubles sweep

MILAN – A sweep by the doubles with Gavin Kruise-Gunnar Kruise, Tyler Denham-Nathan Bowman, Tyler Hatfield-Matthew Fink and Zach Farmer-Luke Morse powered Milan to a 7-1 win over St. Mary Catholic Central Thursday.

Milan also got singles wins from Matthew Bowman, Peter Pena and Sawyer Johnson.

Ian Bird picked up SMCC’s point at No. 2 singles.
