Local Sports: Carlson's Jaskula records two shutouts in tournament

GIBRALTAR – Junior goalkeeper Brady Jaskula recorded nine saves in the first game and seven in the second as Gibraltar Carlson beat Trenton 2-0 and Detroit Cesar Chavez 3-0 in the Carlson-Woodhaven Tournament Saturday.

Kyler Ostrowski led the offense with two goals in each game. Luis Jasso notched two assists in the first game and a goal in the second. Harry Elmazaj was credited with two assists in the second game and Jack Watkins had one for Carlson (2-0-1).

St. Mary Catholic Central lost to Trenotn 1-0 and tied Ceasar Chavez 3-3. Will Shafer, Caleb Hendrix, and Seth Hendrix scored for the Falcons and Shafer and Holden Kennedy registered assists.

Woodhaven hosted the other side of the tournament.

New Boston Huron played there and dropped its first game to Dearborn Edsel Ford 5-1, then bounced back to tie Allen Park 2-2.

Carson Downey scored in the first game and Drew Slane and Ibrahim Muhammad played well. Goals in the second game came from Tyler Toth and Sebastian Horvath off assists from Aidan Dolencic and Andy Traster. Luke Hamilton and Jack Maxwell played well.

Rams fall short

YPSILANTI – Brady McBride scored a goal in each game, but Flat Rock fell 4-3 to Dearborn Henry Ford and 5-1 to Belleville Saturday.

The Rams also got goals from Mitchell Smith and Caleb Rollins.

Bedford reaches semis

MACOMB – Bedford opened its season by going 3-2 and falling in the semifinals of the Macomb Dakota Invitational.

“It was a pretty good start to the season as we defeated the teams we should and lost to two of the better teams in the state (in) Division 1,” Bedford coach Jodi Manore said.

The Mules beat Utica 25-20, 25-17, Romeo 25-10, 26-24, and Grand Blanc 33-31, 25-17, but fell to Farmington Hills Mercy 25-15, 25-18 and Birmingham Marian 25-23, 25-10.

Hannah Fausz led with 25 Kills, while Jaelyn Hall added 23 Kills and hit .429, Macy Madalinski 22 and hit .396, and Victoria Gray 18 and hit .429. Gray also logged 14 blocks.

Kaylin Schroeder was credited with 65 assists and 21 points, while Rylee Haberland (56 digs) and Taylor Destatte (31 digs, 19 points) led the defense.

Airport makes progress

ADRIAN – Savannah Barkley had 27 kills and Jade Mittendorf rang up 25 digs as Airport opened its season Saturday in the Adrian Tournament.

“We went 0-5 on the day,” Airport coach Stephanie Miller said. “We got better as the day went on. We’re young, very young. We have five freshmen on the team, with two of those being our setters and two more being starters. It’s a process and today was our first outing.”

Milan places fourth

BATTLE CREEK – Milan scored 313 points to take fourth place in the Spartan Relays Saturday.

The Big Reds finished behind Midland Dow (475), Portage Central (377) and Kalamazoo Loy Norrix (318).

Milan was fourth in the diving (Nadia Smith, Emily Huelke), breaststroke (Rylee Mitchell, Sara Mitchell, Ginny Heikka, Mary Kate Wayne), 400 freestyle (Phoebe Rhoney, Annabelle Williams, Krista Cook, Kiera Luhrs), individual medley (Wayne, Rylee Mitchell, Kam Stripp, Elaina Malach), and medley (Cook, Wayne, Stripp, Rylee Mitchell) relays.

PRO BASEBALL

Toledo bats quiet

COLUMBUS – Spencer Torkelson went 2-for-4 to lift his average to .223, but the Toledo Mud Hens managed just two other hits in a 2-1 loss to Columbus Saturday night.
