Local Sports: Dundee claims 30th straight District; Monroe swimmers win

DUNDEE – Make it three straight decades for Dundee's wrestling team.

The Vikings won their 30th consecutive Team District wrestling championship Wednesday, defeating Ida 84-0 in the finals after winning 74-6 against Erie Mason in the opening round.

Ida defeated Milan 48-36 in the day's other semifinal match.

"The guys wrestled well," Dundee coach Tim Roberts said. "It was nice to get a good last dual at home for the year. It was a good performance. Now it’s time to get ready for individual Districts (Saturday at Dundee)."

Going undefeated on the day for Dundee were Ashton Viers (103), Jacob Foster (112), Kade Kluce (119), Braeden Davis (125), Kyle Smith (130), Kaden Chinavare (135), Kole Katschor (135), Trey Parker (140), Logan Sander (145), Austin Jaworski (145), Aiden Davis (152), Jacob Fenbert (160), Casey Swiderski (160), Connor Collins (171), Ethan Collins (189), Abe Bruck (215), Kaiden Hubbell (285).

Dundee improved to 12-4 overall.

Joshua Pfeiffer (119), Trevor Konieczny (130), Josh Crozier (135), Josh Rose (140), Tyler Konieczny (145), Izaiah Machuca (152), Grady Mellen (171), and Chris Galloway (285) were winners for Ida against Milan.

Jordan Vinson (103), Dylan Spencer (112), Kaleb Martin (125), Tasen Bevins (160), Micah Adkins (189), and Dallas Goodridge (215) were winners for Milan.

Erie Mason's Andrew Perchard won at 285.

PREP WRESTLING

Rams fall in final

ROMULUS – Grosse Ile earned bonus points in each of the last three matches to defeat Flat Rock 43-31 in the District finals Wednesday.

The Rams advanced to the championship with a 72-6 win over Romulus in the opening round.

Brayden Williams (215), Joseph Siniarski (285) and Nicholas Dropiewski (103) each had a pin to put Flat Rock ahead 18-0 to start the match against Grosse Ile. Nicholas Sikorski (135), Walter Mack (145) and Andrew Given (152) put the Rams back in the lead later in the match, but the Red Devils closed out strong to win.

Romulus voided nine weight classes in the semifinals.

Monroe gets first win

YPSILANTI – Monroe's boys earned their first victory of the season Tuesday, splitting a tri-meet at Ypsilanti. The Trojans defeated the Grizzlies 91-64. Erie-Ida topped Monroe 125-48.

Monroe won seven of the 12 events against Ypsilanti. Reggie Geftos and Elliott Moore finished 1-2 in the 200-yard individual medley, Alex Apetroaei and Ashton Walker were 1-2 in the 50 free, Walker and Geftos were 1-2 in the 100 free, and Maxx Adams and Robert Johnson took the top two spots in the 500 free. The medley relay of Zek Green, Apetroaei, Geftos and Walker won with a season-best performance.

"Swimming teams that are closer in size to ours really allowed our guys to race," Monroe coach Erin Dowen said. "We are thrilled to have our first win of the season against Ypsi, and I was very pleased with our performances against Erie-Ida. We were able to be much more competitive with them than I had anticipated. Great work Trojans."

Milan tops Trenton

TRENTON – Milan won 10 of 12 events Tuesday to defeat Trenton 107-78.

Winners for the Big Reds were Andy Dobrzanski (200 IM, 100 free), Sam Kennedy (50 free), Steven Gottardi (diving), Ben Heikka (500 free), Zach Heikka (backstroke), Elias Hobbs (breaststroke), the medley relay (Heikka, Dobrzanski, Gavin Kruise, Aidan Broadworth), the 200 free relay (Broadworth, Ben Heikka, Zach Heikka, Sam Kennedy), and the 400 free relay (Gunnar Kruise, Gavin Kruise, Ben Heikka, Dobrzanski).

Others swimming well included Gabe Edwards, Parker Prior, Davis Vandergrift, Ty Neuvirth, Zack Zeller, Matthew Johnson, and Blake Broadworth.

MIDDLE SCHOOL BASKETBALL

Bedford defense shines

TEMPERANCE – Bedford's middle school teams played strong defense Wednesday night. The eighth-grade girls (4-4) won 12-8 over Pinckney. Cheyenne Ivey, Kaitlyn Kwiatkowski, and Lucy Ewing led on defense with 6 steals each. Erin Miller rebounded well.

Bedford's seventh grade overcame a sluggish start to win 21-6 over Pinckney. Anna Gray led in scoring and also had a good floor game. Brynn Eischen led the rebounding.
