Local Sports: Freshman's career-best game leads Summerfield over Erie Mason

Jaeli Jones has had an up and down season for Summerfield's girls basketball team.

That's not an unusual experience for a freshman getting her first taste of varsity basketball.

Jones has shown flashes this season of her potential but had struggled over the past week, averaging just over 3 points in her past four games.

She bounced back in a big way Thursday.

Jones scored a career-high 15 points and added 8 rebounds to lead Summerfield to a 61-42 victory over Erie Mason.

"(Jones) played a great game tonight," Summerfield coach Mickey Moody said. "She was aggressive at the basket on both sides of the ball and did some real nice things. I'm extremely happy for her because she didn't play all that well the other night (2 points vs. Whiteford), but she showed a lot of maturity and played a heck of a game tonight."

Moody has liked the way his Bulldogs have blossomed offensively.

Ava Fisher added 13 points and 8 rebounds, Abby Haller had 11 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists, Mia Miller had 10 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals, and Destanee Smith chipped in 6 points, 6 steals and 5 rebounds.

Six different players have scored over 100 points for Summerfield so far this season.

"I like that we had four players score in double figures," Moody said. "When we share the basketball, we are a better team and hard for teams to key on one player."

Summerfield led 33-19 at halftime and then outscored Mason 28-23 in the second half. The Bulldogs improved to 14-2 overall and 8-1 in the Tri-County Conference.

Audrey Trainor hit career highs in both points (19) and steals (11) to lead 3-12 Mason. Kaylie Bash added 12 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 steals.

"I thought we did a lot of positive things today, things we can build on moving forward," Mason coach Josh Sweigert said.

Summerfield won the junior varsity game 44-10 behind 18 points from Makenzie Wolfe.

Ida wins rivalry showdown

IDA − Ida came out hard from the opening tip-off and rolled over archrival Dundee 59-37 Thursday night.

The Blue Streaks led 15-8 after the first quarter and 35-22 by halftime. Ida's lead stretched to 20 points in the fourth.

"Ida came out with its press from the start of the game. With the press Ida was able to create points off of turnovers and also created more possessions which gave them more opportunities to score," Ida coach Tim Leonard said. "We did a nice job with our man-to-man offense tonight. Dundee was forced to go to a zone which then created outside shots."

Jessica Schrader scored 11 of her career-high 27 points in the third quarter to help Ida take a commanding lead. Kennedy Albring added 11 for Ida, which improved to 9-5.

Lia Parry and Mirra Borg led Dundee with 9 points apiece.

Ida won the junior varsity game 54-31. Alexa Swiderski hit five 3-points and scored 22 points. Julia Williams (12 points) and Olivia Scheer (11) also played well for Ida.
