IDA – It's demoralizing for a soccer team to give up an own goal.

Ida gave up one at a terrible time Friday night, allowing arch-rival Dundee to tie the game 1-1.

But the Blue Streaks were able to shrug it off and score with less than three minutes left to pull out a 2-1 victory.

“I am proud of the team for coming back from a setback to win the game,” Ida coach Mark McCaskill said.

Clare Allen scored the winner. It was set up by a great defensive tackle by Clare Cogan.

Rilee Weatherholt netted the first goal off an assist by Haden Mannor.

Dundee was missing several players because of conflicting school activities and had two go down with injuries during the game. Sara Merkel, Evie Brandy's, Sarah Straka, Samantha Schwab, Hannah Fowler, Elizabeth Bensch, Maddy Lovoy, Sidney Hebel. Sara Marek and Alyvia Taylor played well.

"Not the result that our girls would have wanted, but as their coach I am extremely proud of the work they put in tonight and am so grateful that we get to watch our players develop into young women with integrity, work ethic, and character that will take them far in life,” Dundee coach Mark Dotson said.

Carlson tops SMCC

A shorthanded roster hurt both teams, but Gibraltar Carlson found the right mix of subs to overcome St. Mary Catholic Central 5-1 Friday.

The Marauders were without six players and were coming off back-to-back losses to Trenton and Woodhaven.

"I wasn't sure how it was going to go," Carlson coach Steve Briggs said. "We were able to get off to a good start. We had the wind behind us and had a couple nice distance goals."

Rachael Poli had two goals and an assist for Carlson (8-3-2). Anika Irwin, Lillian Raines, and Kristine Piatt-Bakos also scored with assists from Amanda Flores, Piatt-Bakos, and Ella Mason.

Emma Zaleski scored for SMCC with an assist from Ava Kuehnlein. Kaydence Johnson and Cailynne Flint also played well. The Kestrels fell to 7-8 overall.

"The Kestrels had a hard time finding the back of the net tonight," SMCC coach Laura Perry said. "Carlson did a good job of slotting their passes behind our backline. We couldn't prevent the shots from getting off. Most of their goals were results of shots released beyond the 18."
