GHS grabs road win over Morton

MORTON — The Galesburg High School boys basketball team moved to 18-4 overall after a 60-47 non-conference road victory over Morton on Tuesday night.

Senior point guard Jeremiah Babers finished with 24 points to lead the Silver Streaks.

GALESBURG BOYS SWIMMING

Streaks sink Eagles

DUNLAP — The Galesburg High School boys swimming and diving team beat Dunlap 107-78 on Tuesday.

Carson Olson, Zeke Kent, Luke Thomas and Riley Stevenson made up the Silver Streaks’ 200 yard medley relay team, and they placed first in 1:49.18.

Stevenson touched the wall first in the 50 free (23.06), and the sophomore won the 100 butterfly (57.24). Olson’s time of 59.71 seconds gave the freshman first place in the 100 backstroke.

Galesburg sophomore Andrew Peterson took one-meter diving with a score fo 219.05.

Josh Lee, Peterson, Stevenson and Foster formed the Streaks’ 400 free relay team, and they won in 3:36.45.

AREA BOYS BASKETBALL

Knoxville beats MerCo

KNOXVILLE — The Knoxville High School boys basketball team grabbed a 58-44 win over Mercer County on Tuesday night.

David Hise led the Blue Bullets with 22 points. Braden Downs and

Beau Honeycutt had 12 points each for Knoxville.

Ridgewood edges Annawan

ANNAWAN — The Ridgewood boys basketball team edged Annawan 57-56 on Tuesday night.

Lucas Kessinger had 23 points to lead the Spartans, and Keagan Hixson chipped in 13 points for Ridgewood. A Hixson layup with five seconds left put the Spartans ahead of the Braves for good.

West Central falls to Stark County

BIGGSVILLE — The West Central boys basketball team suffered a 64-53 loss to Stark County on Tuesday evening.

Mason Carnes had 21 points to lead the Heat. Devin Shaw pitched in 10 points for West Central.

In other area boys action, United downed Abingdon-Avon 58-47 in rural Monmouth. Riverdale grabbed a 71-58 home win over Monmouth-Roseville.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Sandburg taken by Black Hawk

GALESBURG — Connor Barnett finished a rebound shy of a double-double, but Black Hawk was lights-out from long range in handing the Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team a 96-80 loss on Tuesday in the Chargers’ Arrowhead Conference opener.

Atem Agot (22 points and six rebounds) drilled a 3-pointer with 17:00 left to pull Sandburg (11-7, 0-1) within 43-42, but the Chargers would never get that close again as the Braves responded with an 8-0 run. Black Hawk finished the game 17 of 38 from 3-point range, with 10 of those makes coming in the second half.

Barnett reached a season-high in scoring for the second straight game, finishing with 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting. He also grabbed a team- and season-best nine rebounds, finishing one board away from his first career double-double.

Matt Williams pitched in 12 points and five rebounds for Sandburg.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Knox wins third straight

GALESBURG - The Knox College women's basketball team defeated Illinois College 66-57 on Tuesday night for their third straight victory.

The win moves the Prairie Fire to 3-3 in the Midwest Conference.

Knox and IC played to an 11-11 tie through the first quarter, but the Blues pulled away in the second period to take a 28-21 lead at halftime.

IC still led by nine early in the third quarter, but the Prairie Fire stormed back to take a 35-34 lead. The Blues responded with a 6-0 run to end the quarter with a 40-35 lead.

Knox dominated the final period, outscoring IC 31-17 and cruising to victory.

Catessa Duran and Sarina Dacio led the comeback with 19 points apiece. Duran also had nine rebounds.

The Prairie Fire’s Saxon Alvarez added 10 points, and Kristin Herndon narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and nine boards.

Chargers drop Arrowhead opener

GALESBURG — The Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball team fell short in its Arrowhead Conference opener Tuesday night at John M. Lewis Gymnasium with a 58-48 loss to Black Hawk.

The Chargers (2-12, 0-1) trailed by as many as 16 in the first half but used an 11-1 stretch to close the third quarter to claw within 40-35. Karsen White opened the burst with back-to-back 3-pointers.

Sandburg pulled within 47-46 with 6:05 to play as White fed Lilly Blackford for a layup, but the Braves held the Chargers to just one bucket the rest of the game, outscoring them 11-2.

Emily Cash had nine points and a team-best seven rebounds for the Chargers. The sophomore was 3 of 6 from the field, 3 for 3 at the free-throw line and added an assist and a steal.

Sandburg’s Natalie Righi had 11 points, and the Chargers’ Kelsi Legge chipped in nine points, three assists, three blocks and two steals.
