Local Sports: Ida soccer extends perfect start with third shutout in a row

IDA − Ida's boys soccer team has looked unbeatable at times this year.

The Blue Streaks are off a perfect 11-0 start and a have averaged an incredible 5.1 goals per game through that stretch.

But just as often, it's the defense that has made the difference, head coach Tim Allen said.

"Everyone has embraced their part of the team," Allen said. "A lot of times the goals get recognized, but our defense and half backs are in the trenches every game."

The defense has been getting its due more recently. Ida recorded its third-straight shutout Monday night with a 5-0 win over Blissfield.

Ida had 17 shots in the first half but could not find the back of the net until the 22-minute mark with a goal from Grantham Nelson on a pass from Dustin Holycross.

Nelson scored three goals in the game to lead the Blue Streaks. Evan Schmidtz added two goals and as assist. Dillion Holycross and Asher Hamm also had assists.

Hamm has been a welcome contributor to the team.

"Asher is not a starter but has been very productive up front," Allen said. "He plays with a lot of energy and the team feed off of it."

Ida sits in first place and improved to 5-0 in the Lenawee County Athletic Association.

"Overall, it was a good team effort," Allen said.

SMCC mercies Jefferson

Holden Kennedy and Will Schafer scored two goals each to lead St. Mary Catholic Central to an 8-0 win over Jefferson Monday.

Jaden Paquette, Seth Hendrick, Carter Hoffman, and Steven Hypio also scored for the Falcons. Kennedy added five assists, while Paquette, Hypio, and Schafer had one apiece. Trent Zachel and Cameron Cole shared the shutout in goal.

"We were able to spread the ball around and get some new players on the scorebook today," SMCC coach Nathan Olson said.

Jasso leads rout

SOUTHGATE − Luis Jasso scored three goals and an assist to lead Gibraltar Carlson to an 8-0 win over Southgate Anderson Monday.

Nick Valadez also recorded a hat trick, with other tallies from Harry Elmazaj and Aidan Malec. Kyler Ostrowski had four assists and Zack Walder had 2.

Carlson improved to 8-1-4 overall and 4-0-2 in the Downriver League.

PREP VOLLEYBALL

Kestrels sweep Milan

MILAN − St. Mary Catholic Central improved to 13-4 overall and 3-0 in the Huron League with a three-set sweep over Milan Monday, winning 25-15, 25-14, 25-18.

Jessica Costlow led SMCC in both kills (16) and digs (16). McKenna Payne added 8 kills and 19 assists, Leah DeSarbo had 19 assists and 3 aces, Raelyn Turner recorded 12 digs and 2 aces, Madeline Dettling had 7 kills and 2 blocks, and Ashley Ruhlig had 9 digs and 2 aces.

Airport wins in four

CARLETON − Airport defeated Jefferson in four sets Monday, winning 25-23, 25-18, 24-26, 25-14 to improve to 8-12 overall and 2-1 in the Huron League.

Savannah Barkley (11 kills), RaeAnn Drummond (8 kills), and Joelle Shrewsbury (23 assists) led the offense. Defensively, Jade Mittendorf led with 13 digs and Peyton Zajac had 12.

Mya Salazar had a great game for the Bears with 20 assists, 14 digs and 2 aces. Lindsey Gennoe had 14 digs, Julia Perry led in kills with 7, and Gracie Jones added 6 kills and 3 blocks.

Huron defense shines

NEW BOSTON − New Boston Huron struggled in the second set but rolled past Flat Rock Monday night, 25-17, 9-25, 25-22, 25-10.

Huron played well defensively, with five players recording five or more digs, led by Miranda Jasinski and Allison Hollingshead with 11 apiece. Gabby Cumbo posted 5 kills, 6 digs and 4 assists, Ellen Town had 7 kills and 8 digs, and Quinn Drysdale added 5 digs and 9 assists.

Carlson splits tri

ERIE − Gibraltar Carlson went 1-1 Monday in a tri-match at Erie Mason, defeating the host school 20-25, 25-16, 25-17 and falling to Hudson 25-19, 25-22.

Abby Schenavar led Carlson with 12 kills, 3 blocks and 3 digs against Mason. Emma Ferguson added 32 assists, 7 digs and 3 kills, Skylar Zaranka had 11 digs, 8 kills and 6 aces, and Ava Romej recorded 5 kills and 5 aces.

"We started out slow, but once we got our attacking going, we looked much better," Carlson coach Bill Henneman said. "The girls are having fun this season and they are trying things we talk about and have worked on. It's great to see the progress."

Zaranka also had a strong game against Hudson with 8 kills, 6 digs and 5 aces. Carlson moved to 4-6 overall.

Mason went 0-2 on the day, also falling to Hudson 27-25, 29-27.

Cami Zaleski (18 digs, 17 points, 7 aces), Elizabeth Sweeney (10 kills, 2 blocks), Jayanna Willets (10 digs), Brooklyn Langenderfer (21 assists, 12 points, 9 digs), and Geneva Bomia (6 points, 4 aces) played well for the Eagles.

PREP GOLF

Three share medalist

NEW BOSTON − Three girls shared medalist honors as New Boston Huron slipped past St. Mary Catholic Central by just two strokes 236-238 Monday at Willow Metropark.

SMCC's Alaina Wille and Gracie Gentry both carded a 55 to share the top spot with Huron's Addison Bozynski.

Huron had the next three scores with Mira Lazenby (60), AJ Skene (60), and Brooklyn Burke (64). SMCC's Emma Gessner, Ana Cuccia, and Emily Bellino also all scored 64.

Bears move to 14-1

Jefferson improved to 14-1 in match play this season with a 193-242 win over Airport Monday at Big Al's Greens & Grille.

Jefferson's Rylee Dunn had a career-best day on the course. She hit three pars and was medalist with an 8-over 44. The senior was closely followed by teammates Callie Calvin (46) and Kayce Maitland (48).

Sophie Bucki (54) and Hannah Roof (56) led Airport.

Marauders second

BROWNSTOWN − Gibraltar Carlson was runner-up Monday in a Downriver League jamboree at Lake Erie Metropark Golf Course.

Woodhaven was first with 198, Carlson second with 211, and Wyandotte Roosevelt third with 274.

Anika Irwin was third and led the Marauders with a 50. Madison Cooper and Madilyn Peterson shot 53, and Brooklyn DesJardins added a 55. Woodhaven's Abigail Saco was medalist with a 42.

JUNIOR HIGH VOLLEYBALL

Summerfield wins twice

PETERSBURG − Summerfield won twice Monday, with the seventh grade taking a 25-6, 25-21, 25-8 win over Sand Creek and the eighth grade winning 25-18, 25-23, 24-25.

Kennidi Bork had great serving for seventh grade with 15 aces. Sophia LaChapelle played strong defense, while Ava Eyle, Savanna Novencio, and Abby Raymond set well.

Elena Miller recorded 11 attacks for eighth grade. Gabi Myshock, Sophie Stanger, and Addison Rodger also played well.
