GRASS LAKE – Jefferson’s wrestling team wasn’t expecting to win Saturday when it traveled to Grass Lake.

The Bears could only fill 9 of the 14 weight classes because of injury and illness but still were able to bring home the championship trophy with 189 points. Laingsburg was second with 172.5, Monroe fifth with 133.5 and St. Mary Catholic Central 16th with 22.

“I was a little surprised,” Jefferson coach Mike Humphrey. “All the kids got good matches today. It was just a good day.”

Expectations started to change as the day went on.

“We had a really good first round and second round,” Humphrey said. “Then they started paying attention to the team score. They said, ‘Hey, we can win this thing.’ They started talking about getting bonus points.”

Isaac Masserant (103), Cody Richards (112) and Noah White (140) were Jefferson’s champions and Caleb Smiley (135) placed second.

All nine Bears finished in the top five as Dylan Garcia (130), Nathan Masserant (215) and Seth Minney (160) all finished third, and Fred Martin (285) and Martre Pearson (152) fifth.

“It was a good day to get some wins and heal some wounds,” Humphrey said. “None of our wrestlers that we entered lost more than one match today.”

Tim Murphy (140) took second for Monroe and teammates Damien Jones (135), Tommy Honeycutt (145), Brock Graves (152) and Adrian Rincon (285) all were third. The Trojans also got a fourth from Angel Rincon (160) and sixths from Evan Zavala (119) and Zach Graves (130).
