Local Sports: Jefferson honors seniors by winning Diamond Dolls
Jefferson’s softball team honored its three seniors with a trio of wins in the Diamond Dolls Duels it hosted Saturday.
The Bears mauled Ypsilanti 15-0, Detroit Western 15-0 and Ferndale 12-0.
Amber Burzlaff earned all three wins. She fanned 13, giving her 106 strikeouts for her career.
Fellow seniors Carly Grassley (3 hits, 3 runs, 3 RBI) and Lily Liptow (5 runs) also made major contributions for the 18-7 Bears.
Emmi Liptow led the way with six hits and Julia Perry had a home run among her three hits.
“All 15 girls contributed to our success today,” Jefferson coach Chad Liptow said.
PREP SOFTBALL
Whiteford goes 3-0
CANTON – Whiteford made an impressive showing in the Michigan Challenge Tournament Saturday, beating Walled Lake Northern junior varsity 9-0, Southgate Anderson 17-3 and Livonia Stevenson 16-0.
Unity Nelson won two games and struck out 12 in each. Berlynn Keller had nine strikeouts in her win. Ally VanBrandt led the offense, going 8-for-11 with eight RBI and seven runs. Keller added six hits, including a home run, and Anna VanBrandt logged five hits.
Dundee suffered a pair of heartbreaking losses to state-ranked teams.
The Vikings opened by beating New Boston Huron 9-1, then lost 2-1 to an Allen Park team ranked No. 1 in Division 1, and finished the day by falling 6-5 to a Milford Lakeland team ranked in the Top 10 in Division 1.
Kaylee Imo and Mckenna Salley pitched well for Dundee. Kelsey Schmidt led the offense with six hits and Salley had five.
PREP BASEBALL
Pearce plates winner
Braden Pearce ended the game with a walk-off hit in the fifth inning as Monroe beat Ida 11-1 Saturday.
Drew Scznsny and Ashton Elmer had two hits each with Scznsny driving in three runs. Winning pitcher Tristin Panza had two RBI for the 15-5 Trojans.
Jets, Vikings split
CARLETON – Dundee outslugged Airport 8-4 in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday, then the Jets came back to win a 2-1 pitchers’ duel in the second game.
Ryan Zanger, Matt Atkinson, and Drew Bolster had two hits each for Dundee in the opener and Cooper Buhl earned the win. Tyler Lakatos and Brayden Moore had two hits apiece for Airport.
The second game went nine innings. Dominic Jones earned the win in relief of Nathan Depew. Corey Ferris had two hits and Moore went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Bolster notched a pair of hits for Dundee.
Carlson starts poorly
GROSSE ILE – Gibraltar Carlson gave up six runs in the first inning of the first game and never recovered, losing a doubleheader to Grosse Ile 9-6 and 8-7.
Ryan Hays had hits in both games for the Marauders.
TRACK AND FIELD
Fichtner, Smith win
WOODHAVEN – Miles Fichtner won the high hurdles and Isaac Smith ruled the high jump for New Boston Huron’s boys in the Metro Classic Saturday.
Huron, which got a second-place finish from Ryan Morris, Lucas Kuhn, Drew Slane and Griffin Mentzer, took third in the team standings. Other top performers were Xander Scannell, Gabe Anthony, Caleb Henninger, Evan Town and Rocco Sells.
Gibraltar Carlson’s Ben Przytula won both the shot-put and discus, and teammate Scott Miller was second in the discus. The Marauders had Cody Britt and Aidan Nagy finish 3-4 in the high hurdles.
Elizabeth Anderson of Huron won the 100, 200 and 400 for Huron in the girls meet. Elyse Miller of Carlson was second in the 400, third in the 100 and fourth in the 200.
Huron’s Madelyn Barbour won both hurdle races with Emily Petty of Carlson third in both.
Carlson rules 200
HILLSDALE – Kirby Carsten of Ida won the 200 meters and was fourth in the 100 Saturday at the Hillsdale Invitational.
Whiteford’s Stepan Masserant was third in the pole vault and teammate Keegan Masters took fourth in the 1,600.
FRESHMAN BASEBALL
Mules sweep Mason
TEMPERANCE – Carter Ryan, Braylon Czarnick, Jack Decer and Zach Weiher led the offense as Bedford swept Erie Mason 11-5 and 11-3 Saturday.
