Jefferson coach Bryan Parran talks to his team during a timeout last season. The Bears opened the 2021-22 season with a victory over Summerfield.

It took Jefferson girls basketball team 14 games to pick up its first victory last season.

That was the only taste of victory for the Bears in 2020-21.

Jefferson feasted early this year, opening the season with a 48-41 victory over Summerfield Tuesday night.

"One of the girls said to me, 'Coach, we were almost three-quarters of the way in before we got our first win last year.' I said, 'It feels good, doesn't it?'" Jefferson coach Bryan Parran said. "I'm happy for the kids. They had a great effort tonight."

The victory was made sweeter by topping a Summerfield team that advanced to the Division 4 state semifinals last season.

"We beat a good team," Parran said. "(Coach Mickey Moody) does a great job with those kids."

Jefferson shot the ball well in the first half, building a 32-13 lead at halftime.

"Jefferson shot lights out in the first half," Moody said. "They had to have shot 80 percent or better from the floor. They just played a outstanding first half and took it right to us. I give them a lot of credit tonight, they wanted the game more than we did."

Sydney Masserant did all of her damage in the first quarter to get Jefferson rolling. She finished with three 3-pointers and 10 points. Kirsten Vanisacker led the Bears with 12 points, including 9 in the first half.

"We've been shooting the ball pretty well in practice and have been spending more time on our shooting because it's been a downfall the first few years I've been at Jefferson," Parran said. "We shot extremely well tonight. ... It didn't matter who was shooting it, the ball was going in. We moved the ball extremely well."

Summerfield bounced back in the second half, outscoring Jefferson 28-16 after the intermission.

"We came out flat and shot 0-for-15 from the 3-point line in the first half. We just played a really lazy half of basketball," Moody said. "In the second half, we played harder and managed to get the game respectable."

Elaney Fisher and Destanee Smith scored 13 points apiece to lead Summerfield. Smith added nine rebounds.

Summerfield won the junior varsity game 28-23. Mia Miller and Marissa Eastman scored 11 points each to lead Summerfield.

Milan 50, Lincoln 48, OT

YPSILANTI – Lauryn Obey took a beating.

She gave one too.

The Milan senior hit four 3-pointers and scored 25 points to lead the Big Reds' to an overtime victory over Ypsilanti Lincoln in Monday's season opener.

"That was one of the gutsiest performances I've seen from a kid in a while," Milan coach Bobby Green said. "She probably got knocked to the floor 5-6 times. They were double-teaming her and knocking her around and she just continued to get up. ... She nursed injuries throughout the game and continued to fight. She could've had 35 honestly. They didn't have an answer for her."

Allie Millina added 12 points and provided key defense against Lincoln's Brianna Clark. Clark led the Railsplitters with 15 points, but scored just four in the second half and overtime.

"In the second half, I made that Allie's responsibility," Green said. "She really shut her down in the second half. ... It's nice to have that ability of somebody on your team who can be a lockdown defender."

Lincoln led 24-18 at halftime but Milan had an 18-7 run in the third quarter to go ahead. Obey scored 5 points in overtime to get the Big Reds the edge.

"They had us down at halftime, but the resilience of these kids showed through," Green said. "A great way to start our season."
