Local Sports: Jefferson softball sweeps Ring of Honor doubleheader

One of the first things Chad Liptow did when he took over as Jefferson’s softball coach last year was institute a Ring of Honor to recognize the greatest players in school history.

Susan Sontag and Alyssa Eppler were inducted last year. Sarah Beaubien and Carol Sweet joined them Saturday.

The event has been a hit with the Jefferson players.

“They like to hear about the former players and what they have done,” Liptow said. “That’s why we did it. We want to show them what you can accomplish in a Bear uniform.”

It is a limited sample size, but Jefferson is undefeated on Ring of Honor Day. The Bears whipped Hazel Park 13-5 and 15-0 Saturday to push their season record to 4-0.

Emmi Liptow led the offense with two hits in each game and a total of five runs. Julia Perry was the winning pitcher in the first game and helped her own cause with 3 hits and 3 RBI. Gracie Jones belted a home run in the first game.

Beaubien played for Jefferson from 2002-04, earning 42 pitching wins. Sweet was part of the first Jefferson softball team in 1974. She pitched the Bears to league championships the first two years and finished with 43 career wins.

PREP SOFTBALL

VanBrandt leads Bobcats

SYLVANIA, Ohio – Aly VanBrandt rang up six hits as Whiteford swept Sylvania Northview 4-0 and 11-2 Saturday.

Shay Alexander added five hits. Other offensive standouts were Unity Nelson and Patrina Marsh.

Nelson and Karlei Conrad earned pitching wins.

Doane wins twice

DUNDEE – Lauren Doane earned the first two pitching wins of her career as Dundee beat Manchester 8-4 and 8-7 Saturday.

She started the first game and finished 14 strikeouts. She got the win in the second game as Dundee rallied for in the bottom of the sixth to win on Kennedy Irwin’s clutch hit.

Irwin and Kiernan Brown logged four hits each while Alyssa Amrhein and Natalie Rath added three each.

“It was two good wins for us, but we have a lot of things to fix and improve on,” Dundee coach Mickey Moody said.

PREP BASEBALL

Betts leads Bears

Jaxin Betts has two hits in each game as Jefferson swept Hazel Park 11-1 and 14-6 Saturday.

Owen Kostoff and Jake Brewer threw well for the Bears in the first game and Jase Johns earned the win in the second.

Chene Mielen and Cody Byrd added two hits apiece.

Miller hits slam

Noah Miller hit a grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning as Monroe salvaged a 4-4 tie with Allen Park Saturday.

Monroe was down to its final out when Brandon Bice, Drake Leach, and Owen Yount got on in front of Miller’s homer.

Allen Park won the second game 7-0. Breylon Richards and Owen had the only hits for the 1-1-1 Trojans.

Carlson wins opener

ADRIAN – Matthew MacBride, Jackson Zachary, and McCullan Greene notched two hits each as Gibraltar Carlson (2-2) beat Adrian 6-3 Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader.

Marshall Kowalewski earned the win and Nico Reach picked up a save.

Carlson could not overcome its mistakes in a 7-1 loss in the second game.

Freshman lifts Mason

ERIE – Freshman Anderson Moore went 3-for-5 and pitched well, but Erie Mason fell 17-0 and 5-2 to Ann Arbor Greenhills Saturday.

PREP TENNIS

Doubles lift Milan

WILLIS – Milan swept the doubles with Jessica Lubke-Allyson Held, Gwen Jones-Ella Warren, Ava Demond-Ally Jones, and Maya Grimley-Gabby Dryden to beat Ypsilanti Lincoln 5-3 Thursday.

Milan also got a point at No. 1 singles from Jules Meads.

Dundee blanked

DUNDEE – Dundee suffered a 7-0 loss to Adrian Thursday.

PRO BASEBALL

Wiemer adds to streak

MILWAUKEE – Joey Wiemer’s hitting streak to begin his Major League career has reached seven games.

The Bedford graduate doubled in his first at-bat for the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday against the St. Louis Cardinals.

It was the first time that Wiemer has tasted defeat since being summoned from the minor leagues. He had the only extra-base hit for Milwaukee in a 6-0 loss.

Toledo outslugged

OMAHA, Neb. – Zach Short went 3-for-6 and Justyn-Henry Malloy was 2-for-4 with 3 RBI, but the Toledo Mud Hens dropped to 4-4 with a 13-8 loss to Omaha Saturday.

FRESHMAN BASEBALL

Bedford sweeps

TEMPERANCE – Payton Sheaves, Kason Snyder, and Hudson Heams had two-hit games as Bedford swept Bowling Green 7-5 and 11-1 Saturday.
