Local Sports: Mason, Whiteford boys earn Tri-County victories

ERIE – Erie Mason’s boys basketball team scored just 27 points in a loss to Flat Rock Tuesday.
The Eagles had nearly that many by the end of the first quarter Thursday night.
Mason exploded for a 21-11 lead after one period and coasted to a 73-42 victory over Summerfield.
“I’m proud of our execution and defensive tenacity,” Mason coach Kevin Skaggs said. “What was lacking at Flat Rock came along tonight against the Bulldogs.”
Skaggs and his players expected 3-0 Summerfield to provide a test.
“We have to understand the history and rivalry whenever you step on the court against Summerfield,” he said. “They’ve always been a very tough opponent for us. It’s a rivalry. You expect it.”
First-time starter Jackson Iocoangeli poured in a career-high 21 points.
Carson Brown rang up 12 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists and Casey Brown contributed 14 points for the 2-1 Eagles.
Summerfield got 11 points from Bryce Kalb and 10 from Tyler Dafoe.
Mason also took the junior varsity game 42-20 as Logan Goodin and Zach Worden scored 11 points apiece.

Parker sparks Whiteford
ADRIAN – Evan Parker poured in 17 points in the second quarter by himself, helping Whiteford open up an 18-point lead in the first half, but the Bobcats had to hold on for a 75-62 win over Adrian Madison Thursday.
Parker had a sensational second quarter, scoring on a four-point play, a three-point play, and making several impressive drives to the basket. He scored Whiteford’s first 17 points of the quarter before a Josh Hill layup put the Bobcats in front 34-19 at the break.
Madison, however, wouldn’t back down. The Trojans scored 19 points in the third quarter and back-to-back 3-pointers by Austin Burciaga and a bucket by Bryce Jordan made it 54-48 with 4:53 left in the game. It was just 56-50 halfway through the fourth quarter when the Bobcats pulled away.
Hunter DeBarr scored 7 points down the stretch to open up a Bobcat lead once again.
Parker finished with 24, Luke Rasor 16, Lincoln Joerin 11 and DeBarr 11 for the 1-1 Bobcats.
Burciaga scored 28 to lead Madison.

SMCC disappointed
St. Mary Catholic Central opened its Huron League season with a thud.
“Riverview beat us in every facet of the game,” SMCC coach Randy Windham said. “If we play with that type of intensity, it will be a long year.”
Riverview led 20-15 at halftime and pushed its lead into double figures by controlling the third quarter 17-11.
Buddy Snodgrass led the 2-2 Falcons with 13 points and Michael Laboe added 10.

Carlson offense struggles
GIBRALTAR – Gibraltar Carlson’s offensive woes continued Thursday in a 41-35 loss to Allen Park.
The Marauders are averaging less than 39 points per game in an 0-4 start.

Ida pitches shutout
IDA – Ida did not give up a point in the second quarter in slipping past Dundee 37-33 Thursday.
“We laid an egg in the second quarter and kind of fell asleep out there,” Dundee coach Josh Salley said. “That’s basically what cost us the game. We came out in third quarter doing pretty well. Fourth quarter we came out there and really had a great quarter.”
Jessica Schrader scored 11 points and Mackenzie LaRoy added 10 to lead Ida.
Kaylee Imo scored 9 for Dundee, and Lia Parry, Sarah Marek, Mirra Borg and Faith Stahl played well in the second half.

Jefferson pushed its record to 3-1 with a win in its Huron League opener.
Gracie Jones scored 11 points to lead the Bears and Ellie Hintz and Anna Boggs added 9 points each.

Big night for Clements
NEW BOSTON – Lila Clements broke loose for 28 points, but it was not enough as New Boston Huron fell 60-56 to Grosse Ile in overtime.
Clements scored all 7 points for Huron in the extra period.
Nina Clements added 13 points for Huron.
Huron won the junior varsity game 47-37.
Jaguars start fast
ALLEN PARK – Allen Park jumped out to a 19-8 lead after one quarter and built a 32-13 halftime bulge in rolling over Gibraltar Carlson 48-37 Thursday night.
Jalyn Bongiorno scored 11 points to lead the Marauders.
“The girls worked tirelessly until the buzzer and I could not be more proud of the progress this team is accomplishing,” Carlson coach Kristin Fabrizio said.

ANN ARBOR – Bedford had no trouble with a pair of Southeastern Conference Red foes Thursday, rolling over Saline 67-9 and Ann Arbor Huron 84-0.
Winning both of their matches for the Mules were Vincent Cole (106), Tristan King (113), Nolan King (120), Nathan Gerber (126), Brock Jandasek (132), Noah Benore (138), Lucas Gerber (144), Austin Meszaros (150), Jake Burton (165), Ethan Manger (175), Connor Green (215) and Chase Norbury (285).
PREP SWIMMING
Dundee survives test
TRENTON – Dundee (2-0) won every event except one, hit four state qualifying times and recorded 30 personal-best times to hold off Trenton 94-92 Thursday.
Drew Bylow qualified for state with wins in the backstroke and individual medley and also teamed with Jacob Gerwick, Trevor Schroeder and John Swisher to qualify for state in the medley relay.
Other standouts were TK Westbrook, Trevor Schroeder, Ashton Rakebrand, Zach Fenbert and Jacob Gerwick.
Monroe gets faster
SALINE – Monroe showed good improvement Thursday in a 141-42 loss to Saline.
Top efforts from the Trojans came from Ashton Walker, Reggie Geftos, Myles Bray, Alec Adams, Maxx Adams, Josh Riggs and Vishwas Joshi.
“We had some very fast swims tonight,” Monroe coach Erin Dowen said.

Carlson falls short
GIBRALTAR – Isaac Kolasa stopped 35 shots and Eli Kolasa, Tyler Watson and Drake Dietz scored goals but it was not enough for Gibraltar Carlson in a 4-3 loss to Grosse Ile Thursday.
Jake Marcott, Aden Brake. Landen Angelos, Justin Genzel and Jager Whitten had assists.
PREP BOWLING
Monroe girls 6-0
SALINE – Monroe's girls rolled to 6-0 with a 30-0 win over Ann Arbor Skyline Thursday as Teagen Pillette shot 183 and 193 and Alexis Woolridge-Lang 175.
The boys fell 19-11 despite a 269 by Evan Eagle.
JUNIOR HIGH BASKETBALL
Bedford spreads points
TEMPERANCE – Bedford’s eighth grade had 11 different players score in a 36-10 romp over Ypsilanti Lincoln Thursday night.
The seventh grade won 32-10 as Chase Atkins scored 11 points and Damion Hart and Drew Bilik made key contributions.
