Local Sports: Monroe trio trails leaders on opening day of La-Z-Boy Tourney

Alexander Moon of Wyandotte Roosevelt led the field Tuesday on the opening day of the 44th annual La-Z-Boy Junior Open at Green Meadows Golf Course.

Moon shot a 4-over-par 74 to lead all golfers on the day and take the lead for the trophy in the boys 17-19 division.

Cale Piedmonte-Lang of Monroe and Aldo Barba of Tecumseh were just behind with a 75. Monroe's Christian Kozska and Kyle Pafford were three strokes off the lead with a 78.

Rounding out the Day 1 field in the boys 17-19 division were Isaiah Joerin of Whiteford (82), Cameron Miller of Ann Arbor Greenhills (83), Michael Laboe of St. Mary Catholic Central (85), Carson Kinsey of SMCC (89), Jacob Miner of Greenhills (90), Jared Fair of Hartland (91), Gavin Grima of New Boston Huron (101), and Nick Edwards (Ida) and Aidan O'Kelley (Huron) with 104s.

Bedford's Boston Gallup and Woodhaven's Billy Sennett Jr. both carded a 76 to pace the field in the boys 15-16 division, while four players scored 79 – Jase Marcott (Gibraltar Carlson), Brenden McCullough (Monroe), Grant Simpson (Tecumseh), and Tyler Toth (Huron).

Rounding out the field were Landon Kongeal of Carlson (81), Thomas Rivard of SMCC (82), Drew Vuich of SMCC (84), Davin Slater of Ida (85), Hagan Smith of Carlson (85), Connor Parisien of Lenawee Christian (86), Zackary Bailey of Ida (88), Enzo Carlesimo of Dearborn Divine Child (96), Travis Richards of Woodhaven (96), Camden White of Carlson (97), Jonah Goins of Dundee (103), and Josh Kansier of SMCC (108).

Brayden Siders of Wagar Middle School leads the boys 13-14 division, followed by Levi Evans (89, Dundee MS), James Feudi (90, Summerfield MS), Cameron Kalbfleisch (90, Carlson HS), Ben Sanders (109, Dundee MS), and Chase Knabusch (129, Ida MS).

Julia Lizak of Divine Child opened up a 24-stroke lead in the girls 15-19 division. Lizak carded a 79 to pace three Jefferson golfers – Callie Calvin (103), Rylee Dunn (105), and Kayce Maitland (110).

Sophie Bucki led the girls 13-14 division with a 102, followed by SMCC's Nora Kinsey (111) and Katie Blackmore (136).

A nine-hole tournament for the boys 12u division was led by Tecumseh Middle School's Liam Doll with a 40 on the opening day. Just behind were Isaac Scott (51, Dundee Elementary), Grayson Cunningham (59, Ida MS), Blake Secord (63, Ida MS), Alex Reeves (66, St. Joe's Trenton), Noah Dehring (71, Clinton MS), and Alexander Hammond (74, Monroe MS).

The second day of the tournament tees off at 9 a.m. Wednesday.

AUTO RACING

Bergakker defends title

FLAT ROCK – Brian Bergakker of Middleville won for the fourth straight year Saturday in the Stan Yee Memorial 150 at Flat Rock Speedway.

Bergakker took the lead in the Late Model race on a lap 50 restart and held on to claim the checkered flag. Eric Lee, who took the lead on lap 23 before being overtaken by Bergakker, finished second. Hayden Sprague placed third, Conner Zbozien fourth, and Scott Hantz fifth. Scott Pemberton, Dennis Strickland, Chris Benson, George Rangel, and rookie Joshua Spindelman rounded out the top ten.

Ann Yee, Stan’s widow, and Pat Moran of Moran Chevrolet presented the trophy to Bergakker in the Monroe Asphalt Winner’s Circle. Stan Yee Jr. pulled out of the race before the green flag with a mechanical issue.

Brice Thomsen took first place in the 20-lap ARCA R & M Recycling Figure 8 feature over Dennis Whisman Jr., Greg Studt, Billy Earley, Eugene Worden, Joe Vanderhoof, Scott Apperson, Travis Earley, Dave Lambert, Regan Ford, and Jakob Lee.

This Saturday's race card includes the ARCA DTS Drive Train Specialists Street Stocks, the R & M Recycling ARCA Figure 8’s and The Vault ARCA Factory Stocks. Tickets go on sale at the track at 5 p.m.

FOOTBALL

Seminoles quiet Storm

The Detroit Seminoles proved their status as one of the top teams in the Midwest Elite Football Alliance with a 45-0 win over the Southeast Michigan Red Storm on Saturday at Navarre Field.

With the loss, the Red Storm dipped to 2-7 overall this season.

The Storm host their final home game of the season at 6:30 p.m. Saturday against the Findlay Knights. The Knights won 28-14 last season in a competitive back-and-forth battle.

The regular season concludes on Aug. 6 at the Grand Rapids Knights.

BASEBALL

Schreiber earns win

BOSTON – Making his second relief pitching appearance since the MLB All-Star Break, John Schreiber earned his third win of the season with the Boston Red Sox.

The Gibraltar Carlson grad pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings, giving up just one hit while striking out two.

Schreiber entered the game with two outs in the top of the sixth inning with runners on first and second and got Cleveland Guardians' Myles Straw to ground into a fielder's choice.

The Red Sox scored two runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-1 lead.

This season, Schreiber is 3-1 with a 1.50 earned-run average and 43 strikeouts against just seven walks in 36 innings of work.

YOUTH BASKETBALL

MCCC campers win contests

Trinity Lutheran student Thomas Vallade was the winner in three contests during the Monroe County Community College Fundamentals Basketball Camp last week.

Vallade was the winner of the 1-on-1 contest, the Hot Shots contest, and the Lay-Up contest for 2nd through 5th graders. Other winners were Monroe Road Elementary student Damien Nartker-Kantz in the Speed Dribble contest and Trinity Lutheran's Ethan Gawal in the Block-to-Block contest.

For 6th through 9th grade campers, Conner Zimmerman of Ida Middle School won the 1-on-1 contest, the Hot Shots contest, and the Block-to-Block contest. Monroe Middle School's Hayden McIntosh was the Lay-Up contest winner, and Bedford Middle School's Jaye Bomia won the Free-Throw contest.

ADULT SOCCER

Team Krug dominates

Travis Campbell and Eric Wahoski each scored four goals and Allena O’Rourke scored her first goal of the season to lead Team Krug to a 10-2 win over Team Drouillard in the Monroe Summer Adult Coed Soccer League Sunday.

Jake Winter scored with a header and Tyler Begley also tallied one for Drouillard. Krug remains tied for first place with Team Hernandez, which defeated Drouillard 6-1 in the first game.

Bento hits ace

TEMPERANCE – Michael Bento shot a hole-in-one on the 137-yard No. 15 hole at Giant Oak Golf Course on Monday.
