Local Sports: Netter nets three for SMCC; Airport's Poe homers

St. Mary Catholic Central earned a convincing victory in its first game of the Huron League tournament 8-0 over Jefferson Wednesday.

The Kestrels led 7-0 at halftime with the game-ending, mercy-rule goal coming with 27-minutes remaining in the second half.

Senior Sarah Netter had three goals and an assist to lead SMCC. Ava Kuehnlein added two goals and an assist, Alex Wickenheiser had a goal and an assist, and Kaydence Johnson scored twice.

Leah DeSarbo and Molly McMillan also tallied assists, while Emma Zaleski, Molly McMillan, and Audrey Cousino stood out offensively. On defense, Cailynne Flint played well and goalkeeper Caroline Roecker earned the shutout.

SMCC improved to 8-9 overall and 4-4 in the league.

PREP SOCCER

Strochine sharp

RIVERVIEW – Amelia Strochine recorded the shutout with excellent defense from Callie Eaton, Megan Scott, Layla Hamilton, Olivia Manoa, and Cecily Hughes as New Boston Huron clipped Riverview 2-0 Wednesday.

Ashley Christensen scored both goals for Huron (7-3-2 overall and 5-1-2 in Huron League).

Shaylyn Carpenter scored five times and Addison Borzynski added two as Huron overwhelmed Riverview 10-2 in the junior varsity game.

Rams charge ahead

CARLETON – Megan Woelkers scored twice to lead Flat Rock to a 3-0 win again Airport in the first game of the Huron League Tournament.

Marissa Bradley opened the scoring for the Rams with an assist from Courtney Kraszewski. Lilliana Lukasik assisted on one of Woelkers' goals.

Ida's Rambags shines

BLISSFIELD – Tinke Rambags scored a pair of goals, but it was not enough for Ida as Blissfield won 5-2 Wednesday.

Rambags' first goal was a header off a corner kick by Hayden Manor. Ramsbags scored her second of the game on a breakaway.

Jets ride Poe homer

Kaitlyn Poe sent one over the fence to drive in three runs as Airport defeated Jefferson 8-6 Wednesday.

Poe collected two hits along with RaeAnn Drummond. Zoe Peterson earned the win for the Jets.

"Tonight we had the best defensive team effort we have had all season," Airport coach Jessica Irwin said. "Raschel Weaver had a great diving play."

Julia Perry had a home run and a double to lead Jefferson.

"For the second night in a row, self-induced mistakes cost us," Jefferson coach Chad Liptow said.

Whiteford sweeps Morenci

OTTAWA LAKE – Berlynn Keller threw four perfect innings with nine strikeouts and Unity Nelson followed with three one-hit innings with seven strikeouts as Whiteford beat Morenci 15-0 and 16-0 Wednesday.

Nelson, Ambrelle Billau, Aly VanBrandt, Mackenzie Ulery, Shay Alexander, and Anna VanBrandt led the offense for the Bobcats (22-2, 8-0 in Tri-County Conference).

Milan tops SMCC

MILAN – Mariah Stines scattered five hits and struck out 13 as Milan shut out St. Mary Catholic Central 3-0 Wednesday.

Leila Daniels drove in two runs and Hailey Knox added an RBI. Terria Ronayne had two great plays at third base.

Alayna Pinkelman and Avery Dalton each finished 2-for-3 at the plate and Faith Dean pitched well to lead SMCC.

Newman sparks Huron

NEW BOSTON – Lead-off hitter Erin Newman got things started right for New Boston Huron, going 3-for-4 to spark a 10-1 win over Riverview Wednesday.

Emma Sic connected for a home run and Rylie Greggo tossed a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts.

Sparks provides spark

BRITTON – Abby Sparks blasted a home run and pitched well for Summerfield in a 4-3 win over Britton Deerfield Wednesday.

Madison Waterhouse was the winner as the Bulldogs took the second game 12-2.

Sparks finished the day with five hits.

Bedford nearly sweeps

Bedford won all four doubles flights and three of four singles to win 7-1 at Monroe Wednesday.

Julia Martin rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 win at No. 1 singles for the Mules, who also had singles victories from Lillian Nudi (No. 3) and Ashley Davis (No. 4). Bedford swept the doubles with Hannah Kudzia-Samantha Clark (No. 1), Jessica Schulty-Miranda Moore (No. 2), Lucy Conlan-Lauren Werbiansky (No. 3), and Audrey Dillon-Grace Deiners (No. 4).

Monroe's Abella Hellenberg won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.

PREP GOLF

Jets upset leaders

Monroe toppled the Huron League leaders Wednesday, stunning Grosse Ile 165-171.

Ethan Janiszewski led the Jets with a 39 while Jake Trythall shot 40 and Collin Lackey 42.

Monroe in middle

ANN ARBOR – Monroe shot 172 to finish behind Ann Arbor Skyline (145) and ahead of Ann Arbor Huron (174) Wednesday at Lake Forest Golf Club.

Christian-Koszka Lombardo led Monroe with a 38 and Brenden McCullough shot 44.

Skyline, which has just one senior in its top 12, got a round of 163 from its junior varsity team.

Little paces Rams

NEWPORT – Evan Little shot 47 and Mitchell Smith 48 to lead Flat Rock to a 198-216 win over Jefferson Wednesday.

Jefferson’s Nathaniel Pulling took medalist honors with 45.

Hudson rules LCAA

HUDSON – Hudson won the third Lenawee County Athletic Association jamboree of the season Wednesday with a round of 167 at Evergreen Golf Course.

Ida was fourth with 188 and Dundee sixth with 192. Zack Bailey led Ida with 43 and Jack Salenbien’s 41 was low for Dundee.

Bedford drops two

SALINE – Bedford slipped to third Wednesday with a 172 team score behind Saline with 155 and Ann Arbor Pioneer with 161.

Frank Soss was third overall with a season-best 39. Carter Klawonn (41), Jayce Yarad (44), Charlie Schmeider (48), and Evan Pienta (49) also were strong for the Mules.

Avery Vanderhoof had a 45 to lead Bedford's junior varsity, which finishing third with a 188 behind Pioneer (182) and Saline (184). Brady Bischoff and Jaxon Nejedlik each added a 46.

TRACK AND FIELD

Milan, Jefferson rule meet

Milan's boys and Jefferson's girls each went 3-0 in the second Huron League quad in as many nights Wednesday.

The Big Red boys won 73-55 over Riverview, 72-56 over Jefferson, and 101-27 against St. Mary Catholic Central. Jefferson finished 2-1 with wins over Riverview 71-57 and SMCC 104-24. Riverview defeated SMCC 108-18.

Milan winners were Zach Spradlin in the 110 hurdles (:15.98) and the 300 hurdles (:42.10), Ethan Budd in the high jump (5-11) and long jump (19-8.75), and the 800 relay team of Cole McElvany, Adam Johnson, Trent Spradlin and Ayuub Amin.

Other standout performances for Milan were McElvany (second 100 and 200), Brayden Humes (second 800, third 1,600), Carson Baugher (second 110 hurdles), Noah Bussel (second long jump), Ronny Johnson (third 100 and high jump), Amin (third 200), Jack Funchion (third 3,200), and Eli Lerette (third 300 hurdles).

Jefferson's Alex Mansfield dominated the shot-put with a personal-best throw of 59-3.5, topping teammate Nathan Masserant in second (45-9.5). Mansfield also won the discus with a throw of 161-3, while Masserant was third.

Jefferson's Isaac Merkel was first in the 800, and Carter McCalister was first in the 1,600 and 3,200 and third in the 800. The Bears also won the 3,200 relay with McCalister, Blake Schroeder, Isaac Merkel and Von Wiggins. Ben Merkel was runner-up in the high jump and third in the long jump, and Caden Pridemore was third in the 110 hurdles.

SMCC's Cole Jondro hit season best times to win the 100 (:11.31) and 200 (:22.98).

Jefferson's girls swept Riverview 97-31, Milan 83-45, and SMCC 93-35 to complete the fifth undefeated league season in school history.

"The other 4 seasons were in 2005, 2006, 2015, and 2021," Jefferson coach Phil Speare said. "The stage is now set for them, but we still have work to do so we can finish the season strong with regionals then leagues and then hopefully state finals."

Milan was 2-1 with wins over Riverview 99-29 and SMCC 80-48. SMCC topped Riverview 85-43.

Jefferson's Alexa Glancy was a triple winner in the 100 (:13.00), 200 (:26.82) and 400 (1:02.29), Veronica Fitzgerald won the 800 (2:24.31) and was third in the 100, Jenna Pilachowski won the 1,600 (5:31.30) and took third in the 3,200, Riley Peer was first in the 3,200 (12:30.89) and third in the 1,600, and Madison McKinney ruled the shot-put (32-2) and discus (98-9).

The Bears also won the 1,600 relay with Fitzgerald, Ellie Hintz, Alyssa Masserant and Kirsten Vanisacker, and the 3,200 relay with Kim Miller, Madison Duvall, Peer and Pilachowski.

Other Jefferson standouts were Masserant (second 400), Miller (second 3,200, fourth 1,600), Ashlyn Nadeau (fourth 300 hurdles), Layla Tahmouch (third shot-put), Katie Powell (fourth long jump), and the runner-up relay teams in the 400 (Katie Powell, Vanisacker, Lindsay Masserant, Fitzgerald) and 800 (Lindsay Masserant, Vanisacker, Alyssa Masserant, Glancy).

Milan won the 800 relay with Jenna Griffin, Lauren Fairbanks, Cami Heath and Malea Wourman. The Big Reds also had strong performances from Heath (second 300 hurdles and 100), Hannah Segrist (second 1,600, third 800), Wourman (second high jump, third 400), Marissa Beck (second discus), Evanescence McLaughlin (third discus), Fairbanks (third 200), Courtney Nye (third high jump), and Griffin (second long jump).

Standouts for SMCC were MaryAlice Lynch (first in the 100 hurdles in :17.21), Lauren Conant (first in the high jump at 4-11), Ashley Ruhlig (first in the long jump at 15-0), Amaya Leslie (second 200, third long jump), Sami Craanan (second shot-put), and Madison Ruhlig (fourth 100, fifth 200). The Kestrels also won the 400 relay with Madison Ruhlig, Leslie, Lynch and Ashley Ruhlig.

Dundee dominates

IDA – Dundee pulled off a double sweep as the boys beat Ida 119-56 and Blissfield 140-28 and the girls handled Ida 98.5-72.5 and Blissfield 120-39 Wednesday.

Ida’s boys beat Blissfield 97-39 and the girls cruised past the Royals 90-41.

Dundee’s Johnny Swisher won both hurdles races and the Vikings dominated the field events with Brayden Ratliff (shot-put), Cole Hubbell (discus), Daniel Kreger (high jump), Noah Nieman (pole vault) and Elek LaPalme (long jump) winning.

Kirby Carsten won the 100, 200 and 400 meters for Ida while Griffin Harmer took the 800 and 1,600 and Dylan Tengler the 3,200.

Winners for Dundee’s girls were Lia Parry (400), Brookyln McBee (low hurdles), Joslyn Ball (discus), Mylee Salenbien (high jump) and Madison LaRoy (pole vault).

Ida’s Kaylee Stein ruled the 800 and 1,600 and teammates Katelyn Bydlowski (3,200) and MacKenzie LaRoy (shot-put) also won.
