Boys Basketball: Jets rally, turn back Milan

MILAN – Jason Ruhlig must have said the right thing.

The Airport boys basketball coach sensed the game slipping away Tuesday night.

Milan had built a 9-point lead with 3:25 left in the first half.

“I called a timeout and our Jets responded with points on the next four possessions, cutting the margin to 1 point at the half,” he said.

Airport then limited their hosts to just 13 points in the second half to post a 45-37 victory.

“Credit our patience on offense and ability to knock down free throws down the stretch for being the difference in the outcome of the game,” Ruhlig said.

The Jets (2-4) nailed 12-of-15 shots from the line.

Joel Westaway was 5-of-7 from the stripe and scored 14 points while Brandon McComas was 4-for-4 and netted 12.

Tyler Denham paced 1-4 Milan with 10 points.

Airport won the junior varsity game 54-45. Lance Choike had 14 points and Aidyn Stahr had 13.

Rams keep rolling

Missing one starter and two other players due to illness, Flat Rock kept rolling with a 47-35 win at St. Mary Catholic Central Tuesday night.

The Rams hit four 3-pointers in the second quarter to take a 27-13 lead into halftime.

Five players scored 7 points or more, led by Joey Godfrey with 11 points and 7 rebounds. Rocco Breslin added 7 points and led the team with 8 rebounds. The Rams improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the Huron League.

Buddy Snodgrass scored 13 to pace the 2-3 Falcons.

Flat Rock won the junior varsity game 46-40.

Mules survive Whiteford surge

TEMPERANCE – Bedford maintained a lead of close to 20 points most of the game Tuesday, but Whiteford poured in 25 points in the fourth quarter to pull within 57-48.

“I give Whiteford a ton of credit,” Bedford coach Jordan Bollin said. “They played incredibly hard till the very end. We did a nice job defensively keeping them in front and slowing them down in transition.”

Griffin Wolf nailed five 3-pointers and scored 18 points to lead 3-1 Bedford. Andrew Hollinger added 14 points and Tommy Huss finished with a career-high 11.

Evan Parker netted a game-high 22 for 1-2 Whiteford.

Huron owns boards

NEW BOSTON – New Boston Huron dominated the rebounds, pulling off 43 boards in a 53-29 victory over Jefferson.

Josh Buettner collected 10 caroms while Gavin Moczydlowsky and Chad Martin had 9 each for 2-2 Huron. Ethan Woolery was the top scorer with 9 points and Martin had 8.

"This was an all-around great team win versus a league opponent,” Huron coach Ted Tackett said. “Each player played hard from the start to the finish.”

Eastin Kegley led Jefferson (3-3) with 12 points.

“Our scoring problems continue,” Jefferson coach Corey Wiley said. “Hats off to Huron for controlling the entire game. We will continue to work hard and hopefully find a way to make some easy baskets.”

Jefferson won the junior varsity game 59-17 as Zennon Grant scored 15 points.

Dundee roars back

MORENCI – Dundee gave up 50 points in the first half and trailed by 12 at the intermission, but charged back for an 89-74 win over Morenci Tuesday night.

The Vikings controlled the second half 51-24.

“It was a crazy game,” Dundee coach Jay Haselschwerdt said. “We were down 15 at one point. I am proud of our comeback. We showed great resilience.”

Braiden Whitaker scored 26 points to lead the 3-1 Vikings. Drew Bolster added 19 points and Ethan Layton 15.

Ida surges early

IDA − Ida took control early in Tuesday's 56-33 win over Manchester.

Ty Robertson scored 10 of his 15 points in the first quarter to put Ida ahead 23-3.

The Blue Streaks held on for a 38-13 halftime lead. Manchester cut it to 45-29 heading into the final period but could not climb out of the hole.

AJ Schrader led Ida (3-1) with 16 points.

Ida won the junior varsity game 48-28 behind 9 points from Jaxon Millican. The Blue Streaks are 3-1.

Monroe still winless

Monroe's winless streak to start the season stretched to five as Grosse Pointe North defeated the Trojans 48-44 Tuesday.

Monroe led early but tumbled into a 22-17 hole by halftime and could not recover in the second half.

"We did not play very well tonight," Monroe coach Larry Middleton said. "Kellen Roberts had his best game of his varsity career hitting four 3s to help keep us in the game."

Roberts finished with 14 points and Lukas Johnson added 9.

Mason collapses late

ERIE − Erie Mason scored just 16 points in the second half as Plymouth Christian rolled through with an 88-53 victory Tuesday.

The Eagles led 25-12 after the first quarter, but the game was tied by halftime and Plymouth Christian outscored Mason 27-11 in the third quarter to grab the advantage.

“We simply never showed back up in the second half in every area of the game," Mason coach Kevin Skaggs said. "Plymouth shot a very high percentage, but our lack of team defensive effort was baffling."

Alex Langenderfer (17 points), Carson Brown (16), and Jackson Icoangeli (13) led Mason.

Plymouth Christian won the JV game 57-51 despite 23 points from Mason's Logan Goodin.

Carlson still winless

WOODHAVEN − Gibraltar Carlson dipped to 0-6 with a 51-37 loss to Woodhaven Tuesday night.

It was the third time this season that the Marauders have been held under 40 points. Their season-best is 47.
