Local Sports: Red Storm gets win; Mules finish 11th at state

FLINT – The Southeast Michigan Red Storm didn’t wait as long this time.

The Red Storm lost its first seven games last season before tasting victory.

The first win came this year in the third game – a 28-22 overtime verdict over the Flint Fury Saturday night.

Quarterback Mike Tucker ran 5 yards for the game-winning score after both teams were stopped on several chances in overtime.

“The whole team did well,” Red Storm coach Tayler Bates said. “I am so proud of them because they didn’t give up. They played as a team and believed in themselves.”

Christian Burkes ran for two touchdowns and two 2-point conversions. Tyler Hammack had 8 catches for 97 yards and Alonzo Nedd and Jon Carrabino had big catches. Tucker threw for 275 yards.

The Storm is 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the Midwest Elite Football Alliance.  They play at home Saturday at Navarre Field.

Bedford finishes 11th

KALAMAZOO – Bedford’s girls scored 5 points to tie for 11th in the Division 1 state finals during the weekend.

No. 4 singles player Ashley Davis avenged an earlier loss to a player from Dexter and the No. 3 doubles team of Lauren Werbiansky and Lucy Conlan also won a match.

“I felt like we were very competitive at almost every flight until the third round of play,” Bedford coach Bill Ryan said. “Once we settled in, we looked like the team that won Regionals.

“This team improved every week.  They worked hard and learned from our tough SEC schedule.  I am so proud of their perseverance and hard work.”

Flat Rock wins two

SHEPHERD – Two athletes from Flat Rock’s Simpson Middle School brought home state championships from the Michigan Megastar State Meet last week.

Reagan Higdon won 70-meter dash in 9.41 seconds and Jake Stanislawski ruled the 3,200 meters in 10:12.01.

Higdon also was second in the 200 meters and ran with Whitney Nanassy, Madlleen Hussein and Ja'Liyah Smith on the sixth-place 400 relay. Stanislawski placed fifth in the 1,600 and was fifth in the 3,200 relay with Caiden Wasielewski, Braylen Crump and Lucas Taraszkiewski.

Braylen Crump, Annabelle Chan and Brayden Bowman also had strong performances.

Giant Oak aced

Michael Bronikowski used a 3-wood to shoot a hole-in-one on the 193 No. 3 hole at Giant Oak Golf Course Sunday.

Vanderhoof rules

FLAT ROCK – Jeremy Vanderhoof led from start to finish to win the Street Stocks A Main feature at Flat Rock Speedway Saturday.

Taylor Papineau (Street Stocks B Main), Howard Kelley Jr. (Late Model Sportsman) and Robb Remick (Enduro) also won.

PRO HOCKEY

Walleye in a hole

TOLEDO – The Toledo Walleye face a major deficit as they prepare for Game 3 of the Kelly Cup Finals Wednesday.

Toledo lost the first two games to the Florida Everblades, falling 3-2 Friday and 3-1 Saturday on home ice.

Florida hosts the third game at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
