Local Sports: Schafer leads SMCC to soccer win over Flat Rock

FLAT ROCK – Will Schafer scored three times and assisted on two other goals as St. Mary Catholic Central beat Flat Rock 7-4 Monday in the Huron League round robin boys soccer tournament.

Holden Kennedy also had a hat trick and Steven Hypio notched the other goal. Assists came from Carter Hoffman, and Jaden Paquette.

“We went up 5-0 but played a very sloppy middle of the game,” SMCC coach Nathan Olson said. “Hats off to Flat Rock for taking full advantage of us and our mistakes. Luckily, we have Holden and Will that righted the ship. Will scored two of his goals off of penalty kicks. They were both cool under pressure today.”

Mitchell Smith and two goals and Caleb Rollins and Brady McBride one each for Flat Rock.

“The Rams never quit,” said Flat Rock coach Sean Sturgeon.

PREP SOCCER

Jets' McComas turns trick

Brandon McComas scored three goals to lift Airport to a 4-0 win over Jefferson Monday in the Huron League round-robin tournament.

All of McComas's goals came in the second half, giving the Jet senior 17 on the season.

Freshman Nolan Sanders also scored and junior goalkeeper Tayton Ruhlig made 2 saves to record his third shutout of the season. Airport (6-10-1) outshot Jefferson 16-2.

“I was really happy with the second half as we were finally able to break them down," Airport coach Goran Cepo said. "We put 16 shots on frame and in the second half we made much better decisions in the offensive third. Credit to Jefferson for playing hard."

Hughes sets record

RIVERVIEW – Bradley Hughes set a school record with his seventh shutout of the season as New Boston Huron tied Riverview 0-0 in the Huron League Tournament.

Drew Slane, Noah Manthei, Tony Trupiano, Jack Maxwell, Tyler Toth, Luke Hamilton, Sebastian Horvath, Andy Traster, Carson Downey, Ibrahim Muhammad, Brady Fleszar, Ayden Shannon, and Landon Julio all played well for Huron.

Blackman sets up Schmitz

IDA – Cole Blackman made a nice through pass to Evan Schmitz, who converted to break a second-half tie and give Ida a 3-2 win over Onsted Monday.

Zach Hemry and Jaxon Bolster had the other goals for the 14-1 Blue Streaks with Schmitz picking up an assist.

Monroe blanked

ANN ARBOR – Ashton Walker hit the post with a shot and Jovanny Gallegos and Austin Dunn played well, but Monroe fell 4-0 to Ann Arbor Huron Monday.

Johnson lifts State Line

WATERFORD – Trevin Johnson scored three goals, including two on penalty kicks, to lead State Line Christian to a 5-2 win over Waterford Lakecrest Baptist Monday.

Johnson has 13 goals in 14 games this season and is 7-for-7 on penalty kicks. Ethan Rains and Landon Worley also scored for the 9-6 Patriots and Eli Dyer made 6 saves.

PREP GOLF

Hoffman qualifies for state

YPSILANTI − Summerfield's Delaney Hoffman was one of three individual state qualifiers at Monday's Division 4 Regional at Washtenaw Golf Club.

Hoffman carded a personal-best 100 to finish 10th overall and second among individual qualifiers behind Maggie Pulte of Bloomfield Hills Academy of the Sacred Heart with a 99. Devyn Manni of Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest took the third spot with 102.

Summerfield was sixth as a team with 468. Ellie Nolan (113), Mackenzie Ernest (123), Emily Simpson (132), and Cameron Taylor (149) also played well for the Bulldogs.

Ann Arbor Greenhills was first as a team with 380, Royal Oak Shrine second with 388, and Almont third with 410 to qualify for state.

St. Mary Catholic Central placed fifth with 447. The Kestrels were led by Gracie Gentry (107), Nora Kinsey (108), Alaina Wille (115), Emily Bellino (117), and Ana Cuccia (126).

Milan, Flat Rock finish

BRIGHTON − Flat Rock and Milan wrapped up the season Monday in the Division 3 Regionals at Huron Meadows Metropark Golf Course.

Grosse Ile (338), Detroit Country Day (345), and Bloomfield Hills Marian (348) earned the team qualifying spots. Rachel Fay of Wixom St. Catherine (79), Alivia Ligrow of Pinckney (82), and Megan Rogers of Riverview (84) were the individual qualifiers.

Flat Rock placed 11th with 502. Sabrina Barrett (118), Amanda Page (118), Chrissy Cumbo (128), and Riley Criteser (138) led the Rams.

Rylee Kennedy (112), Jules Meads (114), and Julia Hawkins (120) scored for Milan, which did not have enough golfers for a team score.

PREP VOLLEYBALL

SMCC stays perfect

GROSSE ILE – St. Mary Catholic Central completed a perfect first round through the Huron League schedule, beating Grosse Ile 25-13, 25-12, 25-8 to improve to 7-0 in the league and 17-4 overall.

Mackenzie Niedermeyer had a nice night with 24 assists and 3 aces. Jessica Costlow racked up 10 kills and 5 digs and Mckenna Payne notched  7 digs and 6 kills.

Other Kestrel standouts were Leah Desarbo, Lauren Conant, and Raelyn Turner.

Milan ends hex

CARLETON – Milan pushed its record to 14-3-6 overall and 6-1 in the Huron League with a 25-20, 25-8, 25-17 victory over Airport.

“It was a great win for us because we haven’t beaten them in a few years,” Milan coach Kathy Bradshaw said. “My girls played very well once they got warmed up and we worked really hard to win the match.”

Sylvia Koch (12 kills), Madison Slack (29 assists), and Amanda Gregorio (8 digs, 5 aces) led Milan.

Airport (10-15 overall, 3-4 league) got 5 kills from Savannah Barkley, 8 assists from Peyton Zajac, and 13 digs from Jade Mittendorf.

Mason sweeps BD

ERIE − Cameron Zaleski dominated from the service line with 24 points, including 10 aces, to lead Erie Mason to a 25-10, 25-8, 25-9 victory over Britton Deerfield Monday.

Zaleski served 13 straight points to begin the second set.

Brooklyn Langenderfer had 12 assists and also served well with 11 points, including the final 9 of the match. Angela Sweeny added 7 kills and 7 digs, Beth Sweeney had 5 kills, and Jaynna Willets contributed 6 digs.

Britton Deerfield won the junior varsity game 25-7, 25-18, 16-14.

Patriots frustrated

WATERFORD – Playing in an unfamiliar environment, State Line Christian was off its game in a 25-19, 25-18 loss to Waterford Lakecrest Baptist Monday.

“Their gym ceilings are lower than we are used to playing in and the frustration of that ceiling got the best of the girls,” State Line coach Gina Yglesias said. “Faith Reddick had a few solids plays trying to get the team back together but still couldn't get the win.”

The junior high lost a close match.

Pirates scuttle Huron

RIVERVIEW – Gabby Cumbo racked up 11 kills and 10 digs, but New Boston Huron fell 25-20, 25-16, 21-25, 25-22 to Riverview.

Miranda Jasinski (6 kills, 11 digs), Ellen Town (6 kills, 20 digs), Allison Hollingshead (15 digs) and Quinn Drysdale (18 assists) also played well for Huron.

Whiteford goes 1-3

IDA − Whiteford finished 1-3 at the Ida Tournament Saturday. The Bobcats defeated Grosse Ile 25-12, 25-20, but fell to Adrian (25-22, 26-24), Ida (25-22, 25-23), and Woodhaven (25-17, 25-18).

"Overall, I was happy with the day," Whiteford coach Janie Bunge said. "We never should have lost to Ida and Adrian. Had both of those games won and just couldn’t finish in the end. We are improving so much, though."

Allison Spradling led Whiteford (9-9-2) with 16 kills, 18 digs and 5 aces on the day with Mackenzie Ulery (16 kills) and Jessica Ulery (13) also leading the attack. Alaina Andrews added 59 assists, 7 aces and 23 digs, Alyssa Ulery had 49 digs, and Ava Hillard posted 28 digs and 5 aces.

Mules saddled with loss

LIVONIA – Jaxon Nejedlik had a nice win at No. 2 singles, but Bedford fell 5-3 Monday to Livonia Stevenson.

GOLF

Molnar gets fourth ace

Ernie Molnar shot the fourth hole-in-one of his career Friday, using a 7-iron to ace the 137-yard No. 6 hole at Green Meadows Golf Course.
