Local Sports: Schreiber, Wiemer make contributions

The Monroe County Region’s two Major League Baseball players made contributions to their team’s victories Sunday.

Bedford graduate Joey Wiemer went 1-for-5 with a run scored in his second MLB game with the Milwaukee Brewers Sunday.

He also made a couple of alert baserunning players and made a nice running catch into foul territory in right field to help the Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 9-5.

Gibraltar Carlson’s John Schreiber earned his first hold of the season for the Boston Red Sox in a 9-5 victory over Baltimore.

He threw one inning, giving up no hits and one walk while striking out two. Schreiber has thrown two scoreless innings this season.

Willets notches assist

TOLEDO – Former St. Mary Catholic Central and Erie Mason athlete Jake Willets picked up an assist for the Toledo Walleye during a 5-4 win over the Indy Fuel Saturday night.

Unfortunately, it was the only one of the three weekend games that the Walleye won. They lost 3-1 to the Iowa Heartlanders Friday and fell 4-1 to the South Carolina Stingrays Sunday.

Willets has 2 goals and 2 assists in 6 games with Toledo.

PREP BASEBALL

Lakatos leads Airport

CARLETON – Tyler Lakatos had four hits, including a pair of doubles, in the first game and finished the day with six hits as Airport opened its season by sweeping a doubleheader from Novi Christian 26-7 and 20-0 Saturday.

Jayden Harper-Lewis homered had two hits along with Kyle Harvell, Shade Daniels, Collin Nowak and Nolan Zajac in the opener.

Daniels, Zajac and Lakatos led the way in the second game with two hits apiece.

Jordan Footlander tossed a 1-hit shutout in the second game. Sean Langton got the win in the opener.

PREP SOFTBALL

Bedford starts well

TOLEDO – Bedford got its season started with a 7-3 victory over Toledo Central Catholic.

Payton Pudlowski, Aubrey Hensley, Nyah Mullins and Kaitlyn Kwiatkowski collected two hits each and McKenna Dunlap homered for the Mules.

Adrianna Kester earned the pitching win.

ADULT SOCCER

Merkle, Winter lead

Mike Merkle and Jake Winter scored two goals each to lead HotSpurs to a 7-2 win over Athletico in the Monroe Adult Indoor Coed Soccer League Sunday night at LevelUp Training.

Brian Merkle, Nate Cook and goalie Will Sowatsky also scored for HotSpurs. Jaden Vega scored both for Athletico.
