Local Sports: SMCC baseball team holds off Ida comeback to escape with 10-9 win

IDA – Ida’s baseball team was three outs from being mercied.

The Blue Streaks trailed St. Mary Catholic Central 10-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning Friday.

If they didn’t score at least one run, the game would have been over.

Coach Jimmy McMonagle’s team did much better than that, putting four runs on the board then scored five more in the sixth.

The comeback ended a run short as SMCC escaped with a 10-9 win.

“We just plucked away,” McMonagle said. “We had good swings. We’ve been down before, so the kids never gave up. They played hard and had fun doing it.”

Ida threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning with a runner on first base, but SMCC shortstop Jaden Paquette made a nice snare of a line drive and turned it into a double play.

Third baseman Brennan Runyon made a nice play for the other out of the final inning. The freshman made a great varsity debut, going 2-for-3 with a double and 3 RBI.

Tommy Rogoff and Ethan Barno also had two hits for SMCC.

Jaeden Gianino went 5-for-5, AJ Schrader was 3-for-5 and Tyler Robertson added two hits for 2-9 Ida.

PREP BASEBALL

Martin tosses gem

BELLEVILLE – Chad Martin tossed a one-hitter as New Boston Huron completed a sweep of Belleville with a 10-0 victory Friday. Huron took the first game 12-2 behind strong pitching from Luke Coll.

Gavin Moczydlowski and Cole Grunwald logged three hits each and Ashton Warren added two in the first game.

Moczydlowski had two hits, including a home run, and drove in five runs in the second game.

Godfrey leads Rams

FLAT ROCK – Joey Godfrey went 3-for-4 and earned the pitching win in the first game, then Corey Lannon collected two hits and the pitching win in the second as Flat Rock swept Lutheran Westland 8-3 and 6-1 Friday.

Monroe’s Elmer homers

SALINE – Ashton Elmer homered for Monroe’s only run in a 5-1 loss to Saline Friday.

The Trojans dipped to 6-4 overall and 3-3 in the Southeastern Conference Red.

Webb leads Mason

TOLEDO – Ben Webb had half of Erie Mason's four hits in an 11-1 loss to Toledo Start Friday.

PREP SOFTBALL

Bedford sweeps

TEMPERANCE – Payton Pudlowski drove in nine runs and Sydney Delagrange six to lead Bedford to a 19-4, 16-1 sweep of Ann Arbor Huron Friday.

Each of them collected three hits and Sydney Shammo had two. Adrianna Kester earned both wins.

Monroe drops heartbreaker

SALINE – Saline scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to stun Monroe 7-6 in the second game of a doubleheader Friday.

Saline also took the first game 9-0.

Alana Aulph had two hits in each game and pitched well in the second game for Monroe (1-7). Jenna Ruettinger, and Avery Collett each had a pair of hits in the opener and Macy Collett tripled and drove in two runs in the second.

Ronayne throws shutout

BLISSFIELD – Tierra Ronayne threw her first career shutout in the second game as Milan swept Blissfield 5-1 and 6-0 Friday.

Leila Daniels went 2-for-2 in the first game and Madison Gray, Madison Mazei and Hailey McCleary had key RBI to support the pitching of Mariah Stines.

Daniels, Hailey Knox, Vanessa White and Madison Grey were offensive leaders in the nightcap.

PREP TRACK AND FIELD

Parran leads Monroe

ROMEO – Monroe's Nick Parran ran a personal best of 4:37 to place fifth in the 1,600 meters in Friday's Romeo Invitational.

Kyle Hoffner placed eighth in the same race in a personal-best 4:42 and Andrew Foshag was 14th in the 3,200.

Dundee relay wins

HILLSDALE – The 800-meter relay of Kris Breitner, Daniel Kreger, Colton Bordine and Caden Bellaire took first place to highlight a second-place finish by Dundee's boys in the Hillsdale Invitational Friday.

Bordine (long jump), Noah Nieman (pole vault), Johnny Swisher (high hurdles) and the 1,600-meter relay of Swisher, Breitner, Bellaire and Travis Goins took second. Other strong performances came from Zachary McMahon, Isaak Rubley, Elek Lapalme. Brayden Ratliff, Cole Hubbell and Kaiden Hubbell.

Bridget Waterstradt won the 3,200 meters and Mylee Salenbien (high jump) and Brianna Cousino (high hurdles) took second for Dundee's girls, who also got good showings from Maddy LaVoy, Natalie Swisher and Lily Valentine.

Whiteford’s Keegan Masters won the 1,600 (4:53.25) and 3,200 (10:18.11) and the Bobcats ruled the 3,200 relay with Ryan Oberle, Nick Oberle, Elliott Rodgers and Ty Ruddy.

The 400 meters was a good event for the Bobcats. Ruddy and Jacob Iott of Whiteford ran second and fourth, respectively for the boys and Madelyn Thomas and Aubrie Simmons went 3-8 for the girls.

Alaina McClain was third in the 800 for the girls.

Stepan Masserant, Ryan Oberle, Nick Oberle, Jakob Diesing, Elliott Rodgers, Annabelle Gapp, Kenzie Gray, Haley Luse, Alena Ellis, Jackson Iott, Rylie DeSilvis, Noah Bauman had top 10 finishes.

Woelkers, Bonanno win

GIBRALTAR – Elyse Miller came from behind on the final leg of the 1,600-meter relay and won the race to give Gibraltar Carlson's girls the championship of their own Marauder Invitational Friday.

Brooke Cifaldi, Maraya Finklea and Emily Petty had major time drops for the Marauders.

New Boston Huron did very well in the meet. Elizabeth Anderson won the 100, 200 and 400 meters for the girls and Miles Fichtner swept the hurdles. Other winners for Huron were Madelyn Barbour (girls high hurdles), Antonio Talley (boys 400), Isaac Smith (boys high jump), Gabe Anthony (boys long jump) and Kelsey Trombly (girls shot-put).

Megan Woelkers won the 3,200 and Alyssa Bonanno ruled the discus for Flat Rock's girls. Bonanno also was the runner-up in the shot-put and Emily Pedersen (discus) and Meredith Stull (3,200) took seconds.

Ben Przytula won both throws for Carlson’s boys and Kenny Carlson took the 800 for Flat Rock’s boys.

PREP SOCCER

Monroe battles

DEXTER – Monroe showed a lot of fight in a 7-0 loss to Dexter Thursday.

“Even though it was a loss, I am happy to see the girls put up a fight and they did not get mercied,” Monroe coach Ryan Charnock said. “A lot of players stepped up their aggressiveness and got into the fast pace of the game.”

Milan stops Dundee

MILAN – Milan overpowered Dundee 8-0 Friday.
