Local Sports: SMCC, Milan, Jefferson, Ida earn softball wins

Abby Lechy’s bases-loaded triple was the big hit of the game as St. Mary Catholic Central slipped past Airport 7-6 in the Huron League softball opener for both schools Tuesday.

Emma Gessner also tripled and Camryn Carns and winning pitcher Alayna Pinkelman had two hits each for SMCC.

PREP SOFTBALL

Milan wins opener

MILAN – Milan made the most of five hits, rolling over Riverview 10-2 Tuesday in its season opener.

Leila Daniels, Madison Gray, and Hailey McCleary drove in two runs each to support strong pitching by Mariah Stines, who racked up 13 strikeouts.

Jefferson still perfect

Julia Perry tossed a shutout with 15 strikeouts as Jefferson moved to 5-0 with a 6-0 win over Grosse Ile Tuesday.

Rylee Dunn led the offense with three hits and Cam Carter added two.

Ida rides big inning

IDA – Ida scored four times in the second inning and cruised to an 8-3 win over Blissfield Tuesday.

Reese Hennessey and McKenna Tarry had two hits each for the Blue Streaks.

Blissfield took the second game 8-6 despite two hits each by Olivia Scheer and Jessica Schrader.

“Proud of the way they have been playing, but just need to click as a whole team,” Ida coach Chelsea Brancheau said.

TRACK AND FIELD

Foot leads Jets

RIVERVIEW – Matt Foor won the shot-put and the discus for Airport’s boys in an 82-46 loss to Riverview Tuesday.

The Jets also got wins from Joel Westaway (high jump) and Owen Verduyn (high hurdles).

SMCC-Flat Rock tight

NEW BOSTON – Reagan Higdon won the 100, 200, and 400 meters as Flat Rock's girls pulled out a 64-63 win over St. Mary Catholic Central Tuesday.

Bella Thomas won the low hurdles, Ellijhana Cerroni won the high jump, and the Rams also ruled three relays.

Bella LaFoutain (800, 1,600) and Sammi Crannan (throws) were double winners for SMCC and MaryAlice Lynch won the high hurdles.

Flat Rock's boys won 69.5-62.5 behind double winners Braylon Crump (hurdles) and Jacob Stanislawski (1,600, Also taking first for the Rams were Isaac Arredando (shot-put), Tim Murphy (high jump), Nathan Vargo (800) and Caleb Rollins (400).

Cole Jondro won the 100 and 200 meters and anchored the winning 400-meter relay for SMCC’s boys.

Big start for Ansel

ERIE – Jackson Ansel carried a heavy load for Erie Mason during a season-opening 102-35 victory over Ida.

He won the 4,00, 800, 1,600, and 3,200 meters.

Logan Goodin ruled the high jump, long jump, and low hurdles.

Louden Murbach (high hurdles), Alex Langenderfer (pole vault), Landen Nastale (200), and Aaron Koehn (shot-put) also won for the Eagles and Ryan Joyce was second to his teammate in the 800, 1,600, and 3,200.

Kirby Carsten won the 100 and helped Ida take first in the 400 and 800 relays. Reid Benware was first in the discus.

Mason’s girls claimed a 102-35 victory as Kaylie Bash ruled the 200 meters and the high hurdles. Mason also got wins from Giuliana Nastale (100), Cameron Zaleski (400), Beth Sweeney (lows), Evie Bowmia (discus), and Bailey Meiring (pole vault).

Ida’s Kaylee Stein was the winner in the 800 and 1,600. Katelyn Bydlowski (3,200), Madison Steinman (shot-put), Natalie Motylinski (high jump), and Mackenzie Dollison (long jump) also won for the Blue Streaks.

Glancy, Fitzgerald lead

GROSSE ILE – Alexa Glancy and Veronica Fitzgerald both were part of four winning events as Jefferson’s girls beat Grosse Ile 106-22 Tuesday.

Glancy won the 100, 200, and 400 relays and anchored the winning 800 relay. Fitzgerald’s wins came in the 800 along with the 400, 800, and 1,600 relays.

Jenna Pilachowski (1,600, 3,200) and Mia Schroeder (hurdles) both won two individual events and were part of a winning relay and Lyala Tahmouch ruled both throws.

Madison Duvall, Austin Williams, Alyssa Masserant, Cam Williams, Carli Smith, Anna Boggs, Katie Powell, Lindsay Masserant, and Keaton Heinzerling all turned in personal bests.

Jefferson’s boys cruised to a 100-28 victory led by double winners Ben Merkel (high jump, long jump), Carter McCalister (800, 1,600), Michael Armetta (hurdles), and Nate Masserant (throws).

Will Steinhour won the 3,200 for the Bears.

Huron nips Milan

MILAN – New Boston Huron’s girls pulled out a 67-61 win over Milan Tuesday in a meet that came down to the final event.

Malea Wourman anchored two winning relays, Marissa Beck ruled both throws, and Julia Korch took the long jump to lead Milan.

Huron’s boys won 78-50.

Milan’s winners were Nolan Matley (long jump), Flannery Wayne  (shot-put), Carson Baugher (high hurdles), Warren Pietryka (low hurdles), and Will Walline (discus).

Whiteford relays reign

OTTAWA LAKE – Whiteford boys swept the relays to defeat Dundee 93-82 and Britton Deerfield 127-38 Tuesday.

Brothers Ryin and Shea Ruddy each were on three of the relays. Shea also won the high jump and Ryin took the low hurdles. Keegan Masters was fastest in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters and Kolby Masserant ruled the long jump.

Daniel Kreger won the 100 and 200 for Dundee, which also got wins from Jacob Fenbert (pole vault), Johnny Swisher (high hurdles), and Brennan Graham (800).

Whiteford’s girls beat Dundee 105-70 and Britton Deerfield 132.5-22.5 with Ali Bauman (pole vault, high hurdles), Kenzie Gray (throws), and Mackenzie Ulery (100, 200) winning two events each. Madelyn Thomas (400), Annie Gapp (low hurdles), Alena Ellis (high jump), and Alaina McClain (800) also won.

Dundee’s Kaylee Hovey won the 1,600 and 3,200.

Bloniarz, Rose win

Viktoria Bloniarz won the 3,200 meters and Matley Rose took first in the long jump for Monroe’s girls, but the Trojans fell 82-45 to Ypsilanti Lincoln and 91-37 to Ann Arbor Huron Tuesday.

Monroe’s boys fell 72-46 to Lincoln and 79-37 to Huron despite wins by Ethan Ellis (discus), Brayden Richard (shot-put), and the 3,200 relay of Luke Butler, Andrew Foshag, Kyle Hoffner and Daniel Rhoades.

Kohn, Gault win

ADRIAN – Summerfield’s Dakota Kohn won the discus and Teddy Gault ruled the high jump in Tuesday’s Adrian Madison Invitational.

PREP TENNIS

LaPointe leads Bedford

TEMPERANCE – Sophia LaPointe’s dominating 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles led Bedford to a 7-1 win over Allen Park Tuesday.

Other wins came from Kate Eaton, Jillian Cimmerman, Lucy Conlan-Lauren Werbiansky, Miranda Moore-Audrey Dillon, Dorothy Dillon-Paige Anderson, and Maddie Armstrong-Grace Deiners.

Milan ties Pirates

RIVERVIEW – Jules Meads, Jessica Lubke-Allyson Held, Ally Jones-Ava Demond, and Gabby Dryden-Maya Grimley won for Milan in a 4-4 tie with Riverview.

Carlson, Wyandotte split

WYANDOTTE – Erin Riley, Lila Angelos, Riley Sulewski, and Brooklyn Roldan-Delaney Boller won for Gibraltar Carlson Tuesday in a 4-4 tie with Wyandotte Roosevelt.

Younglove busy

SALINE – Allie Younglove made 18 saves and Chloe Pabin, and Merin Merkle played well for Monroe in an 8-0 loss to Saline Tuesday.

Bedford blanked

ANN ARBOR – Hannah Smith, Presley Napier, and Maddie Helpman played well for Bedford in a 5-0 loss to Ann Arbor Huron Tuesday.

PREP GOLF

Rams show balance

Evan Little shot 43 and Ben Scully and Mitchell Smith both checked in a 44 to lead Flat Rock past Ida 181-194 Tuesday at Green Meadows Golf Course.

Zack Bailey (46) and Ty Robertson (47) led Ida.

FRESHMAN BASEBALL

Bedford offense hot

TEMPERANCE – Bedford pounded out 19 hits to beat Gibraltar Carlson 23-1 Tuesday.

Brett McGraw earned the win.
