Local Sports: SMCC volleyball tops Bedford in Spooktacular finals

TEMPERANCE – St. Mary Catholic Central and Bedford both are hoping to bring home District championship trophies in volleyball this week.

They got each other ready for the state tournament Saturday in Bedford’s Spooktacular with a battle in the finals.

SMCC pushed its record to 34-6 by beating the Mules 25-17, 25-21 in the finals.

The Kestrel’s path to the title match included wins over Trenton 25-14, 25-9, New Boston Huron 25-11, 25-5, and Allen Park 25-10, 25-17 in pool play, Huron 25-19, 25-12 in the quarterfinals, and Erie Mason 25-11, 25-12 in the semifinals.

Jessica Costlow led SMCC with 72 kills and also accumulated 57 digs and 4 aces. Mackenzie Niedermeyer logged 159 assists and 9 aces, and Mckenna Payne led the defense with 84 digs. Raelyn Turner, Madeline Dettling, Lauren Conant, Molly Blanchett, Ashley Ruhlig, and Jillian Anderson also played well

Bedford also was unbeaten before playing SMCC. It knocked off Mason 25-15, 25-6, Dundee 25-19, 25-10, and Grosse Ile 25-15, 25-8 in pool play, Livonia Churchill 25-15, 25-23 in the quarterfinals, and Orchard Lake 25-14, 25-17 in the semis.

Kadie Morse (.551) and Victoria Gray (.510) both hit over .500 for the 48-11-2 Mules. Morse had 30 kills and Gray racked up 37 kills and 17 blocks. Macy Madalinski added 37 kills while hitting .378. Other leaders were Kaylin Schroeder (134 assists), Rylee Haberland (68 digs), and Alivia Brown (40 points).

Mason was 2-1-1 in pool play and beat Churchill in quarterfinals before falling to SMCC.

Angela Sweeney (31 kills, 34 digs), Jayanna Willet (35 digs), Cameron Zaleski (33 digs), Elizabeth Sweeney (29 kills), and Brooklyn Langenderfer (72 assists) were leaders for the Eagles.

Airport wins Silver

MOUNT MORRIS – Airport’s only losses in Saturday’s Mount Morris Tournament were to state-ranked teams – Plymouth Christian (No. 8 in Division 3) and North Branch (No. 2 in Division 2).

The Jets beat Kalkaska, Melvindale and Armada in straight sets.

Joelle Shrewsbury had a big day with 52 assists, 33 digs and 10 kills, and Peyton Zajac added 43 assists, 21 digs and 9 kills. Other standouts were Savannah Barkley with 35 kills, RaeAnn Drummond with 29 kills, and Jade Mittendorf with 46 digs.

YOUTH SOCCER

MASA teams excel

The Monroe Area Soccer Association put six teams in the finals at the WAZA Spooktacular in Monroe.

The U-14 girls coached by Eric Roberts and Scot Chalffin, the U-13 boys coached by Mike Wozniak, Carl Ford and Casey Watterworth, the U-11 boys coached by Nick Venne and JP Russeau, and the U-9 boys coached by Brandon Noble won championships.

The high school girls and U-15 boys placed second.

MASA had a total of 11 teams in the event.
