SYLVANIA – Evan Parker may have earned himself more playing time in 2022.

The Whiteford sophomore was very impressive during two games in the Toledo Emmanuel Christian Warrior Classic.

After scoring just 7 points all of last season, Parker erupted to a career-high 14 in an overtime loss to the host school in the semifinals Monday.

He didn’t match that in the consolation game Tuesday, but his timing was impeccable. He scored 6 of his 8 points in the fourth quarter to help the Bobcats close out a 54-48 victory over Toledo Waite.

“It’s nice to see him step up the last two games,” Whiteford coach Nick Abalos said. “He’s been tremendous. We’re happy, but not surprised. He put in a lot of work.”

Parker is one of nine sophomores on a young Whiteford squad that is off to a 2-1 start. The Bobcats opened the season with a Tri-County Conference victory over Adrian Madison, then split in the Warrior Classic with the loss coming in overtime.

“We are excited and happy to get the win today,” Abalos said. “We’ve been emphasizing defense. That’s been a focal point this year. We did a decent job with that today and we really executed down the stretch.”

Whiteford got 14 points from Luke Rasor and 12 from Cole Giesige. The Bobcats led by 2 at halftime and took the same lead into the final eight minutes.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Triples rain on Monroe

FERNDALE – Roseville completely foiled Monroe’s strategy by hitting 11 3-pointers in an 82-64 win Tuesday.

“They hit 11-of-13 3-pointers and 14-of-17 free throws,” Monroe coach Larry Middleton said. “They were way more athletic than us. Our plan was to zone it up and make them make 3s. We didn’t expect them to make them all.”

Corbin Geiman and Xander Middleton both scored in double figures for Monroe, which dipped to 0-4.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Whiteford falls short

SYLVANIA, Ohio – Kinzie Kohler scored 13 points, but could not keep Whiteford from sliding to to 0-7 with a 44-41 loss to Toledo Emmanuel Christian in the consolation game of the Warrior Classic Tuesday.

“Kohler was very productive taking the ball to the basket and drawing fouls,” said Whiteford coach Les Manley, who also praised the play of Zoe Bauman and Emily Rasor.

Whiteford was outscored 17-14 in the opening quarter and the two teams played evenly after that.

PREP WRESTLING

Dundee tourney off

DUNDEE – Perhaps the toughest test of the season for Dundee’s wrestling team has been called off.

The Vikings received word Monday night that the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Tournament has been canceled.

“It was an overabundance of caution because of all the COVID stuff,” Dundee coach Tim Roberts said. “First they told us it was only going to be two fans per wrestler, then it was no fans at all. Yesterday they said they were calling it off. … That’s the world we are living in now.”

The Brecksville-Broadview Heights Tournament includes many of the top teams in the country. Dundee is among those. The Vikings currently are ranked No. 49.

“The last few years they have recognized us,” Roberts said. “It’s pretty cool when you think about all the high schools in the entire country that we are recognized in the top 50. … Last year we made it up to No. 12. The year before that we ended up at No. 32.”
