Local Sports: Summerfield sets up league showdown

SAND CREEK − Summerfield's girls basketball team was under intense scrutiny.

The Bulldogs came into the week needing two wins to earn a share of the Tri-County Conference championship.

But the first one against Sand Creek was proving difficult with league-leading Morenci watching the game closely from the stands.

"It was a strange game for us as we needed to win tonight to set up the showdown with Morenci on Thursday who was watching behind Sand Creek's bench tonight," Summerfield coach Mickey Moody said. "And I think my girls got caught up looking at Morenci players rather than staying focused."

The distraction almost proved too much as Sand Creek rallied in the final minute to tie the game 30-30 before Summerfield escaped with a 33-30 victory.

"It was an ugly win, but sometimes all that matters is you got the W," Moody said.

Summerfield struggled offensively, shooting 12-for-50 from the floor, including 1-for-18 from 3-point range.

"It was just crazy," Moody said. "We would miss a wide open 3 or miss a layup or a blocked jumper. It was just frustrating, but defensively we had a good game plan and executed it."

Jaeli Jones played excellent defense holding Sand Creek's Emily Carbajal to 6 points. Jones also scored 9 points with 10 rebounds and 6 steals. Abby Haller (11 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists), Destane Smith (5 points, 8 steals, 8 rebounds), and Mia Miller (6 points, 6 rebounds) also played well.

Summerfield, which improved to 17-2 overall and 10-1 in the TCC, needs a win over Morenci Thursday to earn a share of the league title. Morenci clinched a share Monday with a win over Adrian Madison.
