The Southeast Michigan Red Storm scored twice in the second half, but a pair of late interceptions and a controversial call were the difference as the Michigan Gators held on for a 16-12 victory Saturday night.

The Gators led 13-0 at halftime, but the Red Storm turned a pair of fumbles into a touchdowns to pull within four points.

Tyler Lincoln forced a fumble and Santino Patterson ran it back 23 yards for the Red Storm's first touchdown in the third quarter. Lincoln recovered his own strip fumble a few drives later, running it 15 yards to the end zone to make it 16-12.

"We've still been playing good," Red Storm head coach Taylor Bates said. "We've been more of a second-half team. I want us to start playing a little more at the beginning of the game and finish strong."

The Red Storm defense has been strong through the first six games of the season. Bates said that linebackers Nik Durbin, Justin Chambless, and Lincoln have continued to make game-changing plays week in and week out.

Durbin has averaged nearly three sacks a game with Chambless and Lincoln also coming up with a number of key tackles and turnovers. Austin Lakatos also recovered a fumble Saturday.

"Those three guys played a heck of a game," Bates said. "They've been balling. ... They really stepped up and helped the defense out a lot."

The Red Storm had late 80-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Mike Tucker to Marlon Martin Jr. called back on a block in the back that later video review appeared to show did not happen.

"When they called that touchdown back, it was mind blowing," Bates said. "That would've won the game for us. ... It killed the momentum. But I believe my guys will bounce back from that and get ready to go into Saturday's game."

A pair of fourth-quarter interceptions, including one with 50 seconds remaining, ended the Red Storm's hope of a game-winning drive.

"We're real young on the (offensive) line," Bates said. "There's not that much experience on the line. They did decent, but we still need more improvement."

The Red Storm (1-5 overall, 1-3 Midwest Elite Football Alliance) are on the road 4 p.m. Saturday against the Renaissance City Chargers at the Chandler Park Football Field, 12831 Frankfort St., Detroit, Mich.
