Local Sports: Whiteford wins own relays; Bedford softball sweeps SMCC with walk-offs

OTTAWA LAKE – Whiteford lived up to its ranking.

The Bobcat boys found out this week that they are one of the first teams in the state to qualify for the Michigan Interscholastic Track and Field Coaches Association State Meet.

They showed why Saturday by winning their own Bobcat Legacy Relays.

“The boys came out today to compete,” Whiteford coach Jay Yockey said. “That has added fuel to the fire of wanting to compete, win, and break some records. I’m really proud of all their efforts and what I saw on the track.”

The Bobcats won the sprint medley (Stepan Masserant, Kolby Masserant, Shea Ruddy, Jake Iott), 1,600 (Shea Ruddy, Dylan Anderson, Ryin Ruddy, Iott), and high jump (Kolby Masserant, Mason DeBarr, Shea Ruddy) relays.

They were second in the 3,200, distance medley, and 1,200, and third in the throws, 400, freshman-sophomore, and pole vault.

Whiteford’s girls were second to Hudson after winning the throwers (Kenzie Gray, Haley Luse, Nina Bauman, Mallory Bahls), high jump (Alena Ellis, Nina Bauman, and Adriana Indoval), and shot-put (Gray, Bahls, Luse) relays.

The Bobcats were second in the pole vault and third in the discus.

Milan’s boys won the 800 relay with Nolan Matley, Brayden Humes, Carson Baugher, and Adam Johnson and the 1,200 with Mussa Amin, Braeden Lerette, Richard Burd, and Humes. Milan was second in the 400.

The boys team was third for Milan and the girls seventh. Marissa Beck of Milan was the top girl in the shot-put.

Summerfield finished eighth for both boys and girls.The girls won the high jump with Grace Raymond, Bethany Suydam and Megan Pease and were second in the 1,200 and co-ed shuttle hurdles. The boys were third in the high jump and discus.

TEMPERANCE – Bedford posted a pair of exciting wins over St. Mary Catholic Central Saturday, winning 7-6 in 8 innings and the second 8-7 in seven innings on walk-off hits.

Nyah Mullins had a walk-off two-run double in the first game and McKenna Dunlap delivered the winner in the second.

Payton Pudlowski had a big day, going 5-for-7 with two doubles.

Ashytn Batey went 2-for-4 with a triple and 2 RBI in the first game and Adrianna Kester got the win. Mullins and Aubrey Hensley homered in the nightcap, Makayla Johnson went 2-for-2, and Wryley Danielson was the winning pitcher.

Abby Lechy had four hits, Callie Cousino three, Tori Busen played great defense behind the plate, and Avery Dalton hit a two-run homer for SMCC.

"We did a lot of good things today, but also learned a lot," SMCC coach Dani Williams said. "Our girls are fighters and they chipped away when they were behind. We are getting better every day."

Dundee, Milan split

Kaylee Imo and Alyssa Amrhein collected five hits each for Dundee (4-2) Saturday as the Vikings beat Milan 8-6 in the first game and lost the second 8-3.

Imo also had a pitching win. Natalie Rath and Kennedy Irwin had three hits each for the day.

“We played a very good Milan team today and had some real good positives, but we need to clean up our defense in a hurry as we are making too many mistakes,” Dundee coach Mickey Moody said.

Bears overpower Trillium

Ten players had hits in the first game, including three by Rylee Dunn, as Jefferson swept Taylor Trillium 14-0 and 16-1 Saturday.

Julia Perry and Cam Carter picked up pitching wins. Other offensive stars were Perry, Emmi Liptow, and Lindsey Gennoe.

Split decision for Whiteford

HOLLAND, Ohio – Whiteford took on two of the best teams in Ohio Saturday and beat Lancaster 6-3 and fell 6-1 to Holland Springfield.

"Springfield's pitcher (Madison Yackee, University of Toledo recruit) pounded the strike zone with superb spin pitches,” Whiteford coach Matt VanBrandt said. “It was awesome for our hitters to see a lefty with that much control. She really challenged our hitters."

Karlei Conard was the winning pitcher against Lancaster, with Unity Nelson coming on for a save. Conard and Alison Spradling drove in two runs each.

Kaydence Sheldon had two hits against Springfield.

Koch scores three

GIBRALTAR – Sylvia Koch scored all three goals as Milan tied Garden City 1-1 and beat Gibraltar Carlson 2-1 Saturday.
