Local teams compete in sectional swimming prelims

Feb. 19—LAFAYETTE — The boys swimming teams across the state started their post-season on Thursday evening in the sectional prelims.

Lebanon and Zionsville are competing up at Lafayette Jeff, with Western Boone heading over to Crawfordsville.

The top-8 finishers on Thursday advances to the sectional finals on Saturday, with the next eight swimming in the consolations.

Lafayette Jeff

In the 200-yard medley relay, the Zionsville team of Easton Heiser, Bradley Norris, Malcolm Slater and Gabe Berry qualified second in 1:40.46. Lebanon's team of Grant Braner, Alexander Whipkey, Ryan Rule and Mason Stillwell qualified seventh in 1:52.34.

Zionsville went 1-2-3 in the 200-yard freestyle, with Will Raches qualifying first in 1:44.09, Jack Donovan qualifying second in 1:46.42 and Easton Heiser qualifying third in 1:49.92. Lebanon's Gabriel Goff qualified for the consolations in 12th in a time of 1:58.02.

In the 200-yard IM, Will Modglin was first in 1:53.39. Teammate Bradley Norris was second in 2:01.13 and Walker Mattice was third in 2:02.77. Lebanon's Zach Perrine was 10th in 2:15.45, with Alexander Whipkey in 12th in 2:18.59 and Rylan Rule 16th in 2:23.41.

In the 50-yard freestyle, Charlie Krone qualified first in 21.75, with Gabe Berry third in 22.01 and Graham Asam sixth in 22.49. Lebanon's Grayson Goff was 11th in 23.79 and J.C. Reese was 12th in 23.86. Mason Stillwell was 14th in 24.52.

Krone also qualified first in the 100-yard butterfly in 51.35. Malcolm Slater was second in 53.89 and Andrew Dollins was third in 54.11. Lebanon's Zach Perrine qualified eighth in 58.06. Ryan Rule (1:01.82) and Ryan Shepherd (1:05.12) qualified for the consolations in 11th and 14th.

Raches qualified second in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 48.14. Asam was fourth in 49.37 and Adam Kuntz was sixth in 50.97. Grayson Goff was 12th in 52.66 and Mason Stillwell 16th in 54.17 for Lebanon.

Malcolm Slater was the top qualifier in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:52.14, with Heiser second in 4:56.15. Ethan Hatchett was eighth in 5:10.12 for Zionsville. Gabriel Goff was 10th in 5:21.58 and Corbin Daisley was 11th in 5:29.44 for Lebanon.

Zionsville qualified first in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:29.75 with the team of Graham Asam, Adam Kuntz, Andrew Dollins and Gabe Berry. Lebanon was sixth in 1:38.13 with the team of Reese, Stillwell, Rule and Grayson Goff.

Modglin was the top qualifier in the 100-yard backstroke in 50.30. Norris was second in 54.86 and Mattice was third in 55.26. Lebanon's Grant Braner was 15th in 1:05.92 and John Gascho was 16th in 1:07.96.

Jack Donovan was the top qualifier in the breaststroke in 59.56, with Dollins second in 59.57 and Berry fourth in 1:00.88. Lebanon's Whipkey was 13th in 1:10.70 and Reese was 14th in 1:10.87.

Zionsville's 400-yard freestyle relay team of Asam, Heiser, Dollins and Mattice was first in 3:19.97. Lebanon was sixth in 3:45.78 with the team of Grayson Goff, Corbin Daisley, Gabriel Goff and Whipkey.

Crawfordsville

In the 200-yard medley relay, WeBo's team of Collin Maurath, John Jackson, Tanner Weakley and Kevin Youkey qualified third in 1:54.59.

Youkey was 15th in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:17.06 and Tyler Latham was 10th in the IM in 2:40.35.

Maurath qualified fifth in the 50 in a time of 23.65. Lucas O'Brien was 13th in 27.03.

Tanner Weakley qualified fifth in the butterfly in 1:01.32. Latham was 12th in 1:11.16.

Maurath was sixth in the 100-free in 54.25, with O'Brien finishing 16th in 1:02.19.

Youkey was 11th in the 500 in 6:22.06. Daniel Talbott was 13th in 6:37.04 and Wyatt Barnett was 14th in 7:01.77.

Western Boone was 10th in the 200-yard freestyle relay, with the team of Justin Fisher, O'Brien, Barnett and Talbott finishing in 1:55.46.

Weakley qualified fifth in the backstroke in 1:04.14 and John Jackson was fourth in the breaststroke in 1:09.98.

The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Youkey, O'Brien, Weakley and Maurath qualified fifth.
