Happy Friday, people of Laurel! Let's get you all caught up on what's happening locally to start today off on an informed note.

First, today's weather:

Very cold with some sun. High: 26 Low: 12.

Here are the top three stories today in Laurel:

  1. Governor Larry Hogan recently presented his Fiscal Year 2023 (FY 2023) surplus budget. It will strengthen Maryland's "Rainy Day Fund" to record levels, deliver major tax relief to retirees and working families, expand relief for vulnerable Marylanders, make record investment in K-12 education and school construction, provide record funding for addressing mental health disorders and do much more. Gov. Hogan said that his administration's mission has been to leave Maryland in a stronger fiscal position than he found it. (Maryland.gov)

  2. It appears that more changes are about to take place within the Prince Georgeā€™s County Board of Education. A task force has tentatively recommended doing away with the boardā€™s four appointed members. If the recommendation is adopted, the current board will be replaced with a new all-elected board. It would consist of nine members elected by district and a student chosen by their peers. The board would elect its own chair and vice-chair. (WTOP)

  3. On Jan. 8, Love Life Cafe, a new restaurant in Laurel, celebrated its establishment with a ribbon-cutting today and Grand Opening. This cafe is a Black-owned business led by women. The menu offers vegan and vegetarian options. (Laurel MD Connect)
