Local veterans to be honored with video presentation on Friday

Nov. 2—A free showing of "War Stories," an award-winning video focusing on local residents' World War II memories, is set for Friday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. at the Aiken Center for the Arts.

The video is 70 minutes long and features input from dozens of individuals from around the Aiken-Augusta area, with a focus on their time in the military during World War II, whether in the U.S. or abroad.

Sharing insight on the project's history will be Augusta resident Fred Gehle, who coordinated the project and helped arrange dozens of interviews with veterans over the course of 15 years. The video, produced by Mark Albertin, won an award from the Georgia Archives organization as a noteworthy historic documentary covering area history.

The project also led to publication of a book, entitled "In Their Own Words: Augusta and Aiken Area Veterans Remember World War II," with transcribed comments from 147 veterans. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the Veterans Day event.

The Arts Center is at 122 Laurens St. S.W. For more information, call 803-641-9094.
