Local woman, 20, dies in single-car wreck

Sep. 7—LENOIR — A young woman was killed after her car hit a utility pole in Caldwell County early Wednesday morning (Sept. 7), according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Troopers were called at 5:02 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7 to the intersection of Calico Road and Pennsylvania Avenue for a single-vehicle crash. The driver, Angelina Manuel, 20, of Lenoir, was traveling left of center when she struck a mailbox on the left side of the road, overturning the vehicle. The crash caused her to be ejected from the car, a 2010 Toyota. She was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Sgt. Jeremy Yancey, Troop F.

Manuel was not suspected to be impaired at the time of the crash, Yancey said.

"I don't think alcohol was involved," Yancey said. "We didn't smell anything coming from her or the vehicle."

Manuel was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt at the time. Yancey said speed could have been a contributing factor in the fatal crash.

N.C. State Highway Patrol was assisted by Gamewell Fire Department and Caldwell County EMS.
