Locals recognized by MRLA as leaders of Michigan's hospitality industry

LANSING — At least two locals were recognized by the Michigan Restaurant and Lodging Association as "Stars of the Industry" during an awards dinner Wednesday, Nov. 3.

The 2021 Sustainability Recognition Award was given to Leigh Farrell of Suburban Inns for "developing a culture that embraces green technology and practices that benefit the environment, meet guest expectations and reduce property expenses." Leigh is the general manager at CityFlatsHotel on Seventh Street in Holland.

The 2021 Seasonal Operator of the Year Award was given to Frank and Lyn Marro of Marro's Italian Restaurant in Saugatuck. The award recognizes an individual who finds innovative ways to attract and retain customers, inspires employees to provide optimal customer service and drives new revenues while reducing expenses and expanding operations.

The restaurant is currently closed for the winter season, but will reopen in 2022.

“We are delighted to recognize some of the hospitality industry’s finest leaders and innovators in the state,” said MRLA President and CEO Justin Winslow. “These professionals make a positive impact on the industry, the guest experience and the career paths of associates in their respective organizations.”

All award winners have worked in the hospitality industry for at least two years and are employed by restaurants, hotels and other supporting businesses that are MRLA members.

Other awardees include:

  • Hospitality Star of the Year to Mark and Liz Ware of Mission Point Resort on Mackinac Island

  • Restaurant Manager of the Year to Brandon Massnick of Old City Hall in Bay City

  • General Manager of the Year to Mike Costello of the Inn at Bay Harbor

  • Women in Hospitality Leadership Award to Christina Post of Anna's House in Grandville

  • Heart of the House Award to Chef Carl Clarke of AC Hotel in Grand Rapids
