Locals roll through Kiddie Car Parade

Jul. 6—HUDSON — The Hudson Police Department and Hudson Parks and Recreation hosted the 2023 Kiddie Car Parade and Bicycle Safety event on Tuesday, July 4.

The parade departed at 10 a.m. from the HUB Building, traveled along Main Street and ended at Redwood Park. The Bicycle Safety Event took place there once the parade participants arrived.

"We began our Bicycle Safety event in 2019, and with the exception of the year everything shut down for COVID, we have held it every year since," said Hudson Police Chief Richard Blevins.

This year's kiddie car parade had another great turnout, with approximately 220 children and parents taking part in the celebration of America's birthday and riding their decorated power wheels, bicycles and wagons along Main Street. Once they arrived at Redwood Park, guests were all welcome to take part in the Summer Fun Day and Bicycle Safety Event.

In collaboration with the North Carolina Department of Transportation's Bicycle Safety Program, Hudson police officers measured and properly fit approximately 125 attendees with bicycle helmets. They distributed literature and offered tips for safe riding. As part of the event, they also served grilled hot dogs, chips, cookies and drinks to the participants. Afterwards, everyone was given the opportunity to register for a drawing to win a free bike.

Through the generosity of donors, 22 bicycles were given away to children of all ages. The event concluded with riders trying their hand at a bicycle skills course, and finally a trail ride along theGreenway. Hudson Parks and Recreation then opened up the pool at 1 p.m. for free admission to everyone to help cool off after a day of fun.

The Hudson Police Department and Hudson Parks and Recreation have a strong belief that encouraging an active lifestyle in our young people leads to better health and a more fulfilling life. Cycling, walking and swimming are just a few of the great outdoor activities the Town of Hudson has to offer everyone.
