Locations expand for early voting
Oct. 26—HIGH POINT — Early voting locations will ramp up starting today for Guilford County voters casting ballots in the High Point and Jamestown municipal elections.
Two additional early voting polling places will open this morning at Deep River Recreation Center at 1529 Skeet Club Road and Jamestown Town Hall at 301 E. Main St. Weekday hours will be from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. through the end of early voting Nov. 4.
In addition, hours for casting ballots will expand today at Washington Terrace Park at 101 Gordon St., which has been the only early voting location since the period opened Oct. 19. Weekday hours for Washington Terrace Park will be from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. through the end of early voting.
Residents of High Point and Jamestown will have the option of three days of weekend early voting at all three sites from 10 a.m to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 28-29, and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4.
High Point voters will decide contests for mayor and all eight City Council seats while Jamestown residents will pick two members for Town Council.
So far early voting is ahead of the pace compared to the last High Point municipal elections four years ago, according to the Guilford County Board of Elections. As of the end of the day on Wednesday, 530 early votes had been cast, up 11.5% from the 475 votes cast during a comparable period in 2019.
Guilford County Elections Director Charlie Collicutt said the turnout so far during early voting has been steady.
"I think there's a lot of room for it to pick up as we get closer to the end," Collicutt told The High Point Enterprise.
Early voting in Davidson County will remain at the Thomasville Public Library at 14 Randolph St. and the Davidson County Board of Elections office at 945 N. Main St., Suite A, in Lexington through the end of early voting. Weekday hours are from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the library and from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the elections board office.
The only weekend day for early voting is 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, at both locations.
Municipal voters in Davidson County will settle races such as the one for Thomasville City Council. Voters in three precincts in northeastern Davidson County will cast ballots in High Point elections for county residents who live in the city.
This is the first election cycle in North Carolina where voters have to show a photo ID to cast a ballot. The area's municipal elections are nonpartisan, meaning the party affiliation of a candidate doesn't appear on the ballot.
Election Day is Nov. 7, and polls will be open at precincts in neighborhoods from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
