Lockdown Barbie: bored kids are a boon for Mattel

Barbie is doing her bit to help out.

The recent ThankYouHeroes collection honors key workers from doctors to restaurant staff.

It’s quite a change in tone from the female athlete barbies launched back in March.

And maker Mattel should really be saying thank you to all the parents stuck at home with bored kids.

Late Thursday (July 23) the toy maker said sales rose in North America as customers splurged on toys.

Gross sales in the region rose three percent over the second quarter.

Sales of Barbie dolls were up seven percent to nearly 200 million dollars.

And Baby Yoda lent her a hand.

The merchandise from ‘The Mandalorian’ series on Netflix has proved a hit.

But the force wasn’t so strong for Mattel overseas.

Worldwide net sales were down 15% as overseas markets struggled.

Though that was still much better than analysts had forecast.

And the firm says it expects sales to rise in the coming months.

A growing suspicion that many U.S. schools will have to stay shut, may not come as bad news for Barbie.
