Locomotive hire Australian John Hutchinson as new head coach

John Hutchinson was named the El Paso Locomotive's second coach on Thursday.

Hutchinson, 41) is an Australian with coaching experience in the Seattle Sounders organization who spent last season as a top assistant in Japan's first division.

Hutchinson takes over for reigning USL coach of the year Mark Lowry, who guided the Locomotive to the third-best record in the 2021 regular season (18-10-4) before departing for the Indy Eleven.

Hutchinson inherits a perennial power which has already announced the return of most of its corps group: Diego Luna, Aaron Gomez, Luis Solignac, Matt Bahner, Richie Ryan, Eder Borrelli, Macauley King, Sebastian Velasquez, Andrew Fox, Dylan Mares and El Pasoan Chapa Herrera.

Mechack Jerome and Bryam Rebellon left to join Lowry in Indianapolis.

Hutchinson spent last year as the assistant for the Yokohama F. Marinos, a club owned by the same group that owns English giant Manchester City. He was with the Seattle Sounders as an assistant and director of development in 2020 and was head coach of Seattle’s USL team in 2018.

He had a 19-year playing career, mostly in Australia, plus 11 appearances for the Maltese national team before going into coaching in 2015.
