The 2022 midterm elections could bring a rematch between former Georgia Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler and Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock.

“I'm absolutely leaving open the possibility” of running again, Loeffler told the Washington Examiner on Thursday. “I absolutely at the right time will evaluate that and make that decision.”

Loeffler met with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell on Wednesday in Washington, D.C. Speaking with McConnell, who is tasked with recruiting Republican Senate candidates in hopes of winning back the majority, is a key step for any serious Republican candidate. Loeffler, though, told CNN that she was updating him on the situation in Georgia.

Since she narrowly lost a runoff election to Warnock, Loeffler started a nonprofit advocacy group called Greater Georgia, a conservative answer to Democrat Stacey Abrams’s Fair Fight voter outreach group. Greater Georgia focuses on “election integrity” efforts, hoping to reengage conservatives who lost trust in the election process amid former President Donald Trump’s complaints and claims of mass fraud.

“The work I'm doing right now, I think, is vitally important to our overall success in the state,” Loeffler said. “It's important for our entire movement to make sure that we address Stacey Abrams’s efforts in our state, to push back against that, and to have our own positive movement that grows our party.

Trump has publicly encouraged former football player Herschel Walker to run for the Georgia seat. Walker, who played college football for the University of Georgia but moved to Texas, appeared to tease a Senate run on Thursday with a tweet showing a car with a Georgia license plate. "I'm getting ready. And we can run with the big dogs," he said.

Asked whether she had spoken to Trump about the race, Loeffler said: “I stay in regular contact with the president and with officials and constituents across our state and country.”

Two other big names in Georgia Republican politics have ruled out challenging Warnock: Former Republican Sen. David Perdue, who lost the 2020 runoff to Sen. Jon Ossoff, and former Rep. Doug Collins, who lost a primary challenge to Loeffler in 2020.

A few lesser-lown Republican candidates have launched Senate bids: Navy veteran Latham Saddler, businessman Kelvin King, and Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black.
