Log Cabin Republicans lose executive director in another resignation after 2020 Trump endorsement

WASHINGTON -- The executive director of the conservative LGBT group Log Cabin Republicans resigned on Monday, making her the latest of the organization's leaders to depart protesting its recent endorsement of President Donald Trump.

In a departure from its previous stance, the Log Cabin Republicans announced its support for the president’s re-election bid earlier this month. The group had refused to back then-candidate Trump in 2016.

Spokesperson Charles Moran said in a statement to USA TODAY that the end date of Jerri Ann Henry’s employment has not yet been determined.

“We thank her for her service to our organization and wish her well in the next chapter of her career,” Moran said.

Moran did not comment further on the circumstances of Henry’s departure.

Henry, who was the first woman to serve as the Log Cabin Republicans’ executive director, held her position for less than a year.

“This is a long time coming,” Henry told CNN. "The history and legacy of this organization is so rich. I wish we were able to find a way forward, but I think leaving the organization is best for all of us."

Prior to her role with the Log Cabin Republicans, Henry has been a leader in various Republican women's organizations as well as part of the conservative push for the legalization of same-sex marriage.

Leaders of Log Cabin Republicans co-authored the group's endorsement of Trump, which notably did not include Henry's name.

The endorsement lauded the president's "progress" on LGBT issues, saying "President Trump has followed through on many of his commitments to the United States, including taking bold actions that benefit the LGBTQ community."

Trump has moved to ban transgender individuals from serving in the military, which the group said it opposes.

Last week, board member Jennifer Horn also resigned from her position with the group in opposition to the Trump endorsement.

"There is no world where I can sit down at the dining room table and explain to my children that I just endorsed Donald Trump for president," Horn said of her decision.

Moran said the organization would work to ensure a smooth transition given Henry's resignation.

The Washington Blade had the first report of Henry's departure.
