HBO has greenlit a new comedy series titled The Franchise, which will take a satirical look at the creation of superhero movies.

The Franchise is set to follow the crew of an "unloved franchise movie" as they "fight for their place in a savage and unruly cinematic universe", shining a light on the "secret chaos inside the world of superhero movie-making" (via Variety).

Loki's Richard E Grant and No Time to Die star Billy Magnussen will star in the series, alongside Years and Years' Jessica Hynes, Ghosts' Lolly Adefope, Sharper's Darren Goldstein, Past Lives' Isaac Powell and All Quiet on the Western Front's Daniel Brühl.

Emmy-winning showrunner Jon Brown wrote the pilot episode and serves as showrunner, while Sam Mendes directs.

"With a deft touch only he can bring, Sam has brilliantly captured the romance and the reality of filmmaking today," Amy Gravitt, head of HBO and Max comedy series, said in a statement.

"Jon is superb at sending up worlds we think we already know. Together, with Armando [Iannucci], they have delivered a truly hilarious comedy ensemble. I can't wait to see more."

As Marvel fans will likely know, Grant is no stranger to superhero franchises, having played Classic Loki in the first season of the Disney+ series Loki.

Despite Classic Loki's apparent onscreen demise, Grant previously teased that the character could show up again in the future.

"Everything's possible," he said. And although Grant doesn't know how this would work after "going out with such a bang", he did reveal that he "wouldn't say no" to coming back.

The Franchise doesn't have a release date yet.
