‘Loki’ star Gugu Mbatha-Raw says new Marvel series goes to ‘some really epic places’

Nothing is low key about Marvel’s “Loki” for star Gugu Mbatha-Raw.

The British actress is excited for audiences to experience the sprawling world of time travel explored in the new series, which features Tom Hiddleston as the titular God of Mischief.

“There’s gonna be some great surprises,” Mbatha-Raw told the Daily News. “It’s definitely got a sense of humor to it. There’s the sort of wit and a sort of wink, obviously with Loki and the mischief. There’s a sense of fun there, and then there’s also some great action. It goes to some really epic places.”

The first episode debuted Wednesday on Disney+ and picks up after the events of the 2019 movie “Avengers: Endgame,” during which Hiddleston’s Loki disappeared with a supernatural entity called the Tesseract, disrupting the flow of time.

The new series introduces the Time Variance Authority, a group that oversees how time moves, and brings Loki face to face with Mbatha-Raw’s Renslayer, a judge within the organization.

“There’s this thing called the sacred timeline, and if people step off the sacred timeline and do things that they’re not supposed to ... then she gets to put people on trial for crimes against time,” Mbatha-Raw, 38, explained.

Loki becomes the key to restoring reality, and works alongside an agent played by Owen Wilson on a high-stakes mission.

Hiddleston has played Loki for a decade, introducing the trouble-making antagonist in 2011′s “Thor” and repeatedly wreaking havoc in subsequent films.

The new series marks the first time Loki, who is the brother of Chris Hemsworth’s heroic Thor, has been the central character in a Marvel Cinematic Universe project.

“There’s been 10 years of him being a part of the MCU, and maybe somewhat in the shadow of Thor, and now he’s got the full stage to himself,” Mbatha-Raw said.

“I think it’s a great opportunity to go a bit deeper into a more mature Loki, and looking at the idea of free will versus destiny. Can Loki change? Can he evolve? Is he all good or all bad? I think everybody knows him as this very likable antihero, but can he change? Can he make his own choices?”

“Loki” is the third Marvel series released on Disney+ this year, following the arrivals of “WandaVision” and “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.”

The new show is the Marvel debut for Mbatha-Raw, who starred in the 2013 British period drama “Belle” and alongside Edward Norton in the 2019 crime movie “Motherless Brooklyn.”

“To be a character from the comics, get a chance to get some action, the stunts, all of that stuff, I find really fun, and I haven’t had that much chance to do before this, so all new, exciting challenges,” Mbatha-Raw told The News.

At one point during production, she couldn’t help but marvel.

“There was one set that I stepped onto and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh.’ It just dawned on me,” Mbatha-Raw recalled. “I was like, ‘Oh, I’m in a Marvel show!’ Just the scope and scale of the set was so epic, and just felt so cinematic.”
