Lombard police officer, 33, recovering from surgery after armed robbery, shootout that left 1 dead, 1 in custody

A 33-year-old Lombard police officer is recovering Friday from surgery after he was wounded during an armed robbery at a retail store Thursday afternoon that led to a shootout with the two men involved, the village of Lombard said in a statement.

Lombard police responded to a call of an armed robbery at the store on the 0-100 block of West Roosevelt Road around 4:05 p.m., the statement said. Officers encountered the two men in the area of Ann and Lincoln streets, and one opened fire on the officers, according to the preliminary investigation.

Officers fired back, the statement said, and one officer and one of the men involved in the robbery were hit. Both were taken to a hospital.

The suspect was later pronounced dead, according to the statement. The officer underwent surgery late Thursday. As of Friday morning, he was said to be in stable condition and still in the hospital.

The officer is a six-year veteran of the Lombard Police Department, according to the statement.

The second man involved in the robbery was taken into custody and charges are pending, the statement said.

The DuPage County Metropolitan Emergency Response and Investigative Team, the Public Integrity Unit and the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office were notified of the shooting and have opened an investigation, according to the statement.
