NEW LONDON − Park Supervisor Joe Thomas called the Firelands Festival a success at Monday’s Village Council meeting and thanked those involved.

He made special mention of Shawn Pickworth, Adam Gullett, Chris Rowland, Shaun Cooper, Samantha Willis, Steve Roeder, and Bob Wilson, who donated labor and materials for the new piers at the entrances to the grounds.

Thomas noted the second Park Golf Scramble is Saturday, Sept. 17 and the gun raffle is Saturday, Nov. 19.

Council approved hiring Christopher Stolarski as a part-time police officer and promoted Brittany Roeder to campground manager through Nov. 1. Both will be paid $15 an hour.

Council also voted to enter into a contract with Fire Safety Services (FSS) for 25 new SCBAs (self-contained breathing apparatuses) and 50 bottles for the fire department. Chief John Chapin said a FEMA grant will pay for all but 5% of the $180,000 cost.

The police department recently coordinated with the Huron County Sheriff’s Office to conduct active shooter training at the school. Retired Norwalk Police Chief Mike Conney provided the instructions during the two-day event, which was attended by members of area law enforcement agencies, fire departments and ambulance services.
