London eerily quiet on weekend before Christmas

Well-known locations in the capital such as Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus and around the Houses of Parliament were quiet after London, as well as much of southeast England, were placed in a new Tier 4 level of restrictions.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the new restrictions on Saturday, tearing up his plans to allow three households to mix indoors for five days over the Christmas period, and placing more than 16 million people in effective lockdown.

He's said it is necessary because of a new coronavirus strain that it is up to 70% more transmissible than the original.
