New London girls coast to regional golf title

Taylor Phillips was medalist at one under par and she led New London High School to the Class 1A regional girls golf championship at Heritage Oaks Golf Course Wednesday.

The Tigers won the team championship with 351 strokes, 51 better than runner-up West Branch. Both teams advance to the state tournament May 26-27 at American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown.

Phillips carded a 40-32--72 on the par 73 course and advances to state as an individual, along with teammate Sophie Malott who finished third individually with an 87.

Also advancing to the state tournament as individuals are runner-up Claire Jarrett (86) of West Branch, Alburnett's Samantha Arend (88), Iowa Valley's Jaden Smith (89) and Springville's Grace Matus (91).

Also playing for New London were Saige Barron (95), Emma Nye (97), Emma Busby (104) and Stevey Wintermeyer (134).

Durant was third in the team standings with 405 strokes and was followed by Iowa Valley (418), East Buchanan (435), Highland (447) and Winfield-Mount Union (450).

Playing for W-MU were Isabel Kann (107), Ava Hagge (112), Alli Humphreys (112), Lily Freeman (119) and Afton Wilkerson (120).

BHS's BRIGGS ADVANCES: Burlington High School's Lauren Briggs finished fourth individually in the Class 4A regional tournament at Glynn's Creek Golf Course and earned a berth in the state tournament.

Briggs carded a 6-over par 78.

Bettendorf's Shannyn Vogler was medalist with a 5-under par 67 and was followed by Pleasant Valley's Maura Peters (73) and Erika Holmberg (75), Briggs, Bettendorf's Sarah Giese (83) and Pleasant Valley's Elizabeth McVey (84).

All six advance to the state meet May 26-27 at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny.

Pleasant Valley won the team championship with 318 strokes and Bettendorf was second at 326. Both advance to the state tournament.

Third place North Scott (386) was followed by Dubuque Senior (391), Davenport West (399), Burlington (404), Davenport North (417), Davenport Central (446), Clinton (493) and Muscatine (512).

Also playing for Burlington were Izzi Taylor (100), Dilynn Taeger (110), Elaina Murders (116) and Edie Blom (119).

MEPO'S HINES WINS REGION: Mediapolis sophomore Olivia Hines carded 91 strokes and won the Class 2A regional tournament at West Liberty.

Hines advances to the state tournament May 26-27 at Pleasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls.

Anamosa won the team championship with a 385 and Mid-Prairie was second at 392,. Both teams advance to the state meet.

Dyersville Beckman finished third at 407 and was followed by Denver (422), Wilton (424) and Louisa-Muscatine (435).

Other individuals advancing to the state tournament are Anamosa's Cecilia Venenga (92) and Madeline Nemmers (92), Mid-Prairie's Madi Davidson (92), Monticello's Jaelyn Aitchinson (94) and Beckman's Maddie Schmitz (95) and Shea Steffen (95).

Madison Bieri led Louisa-Muscatine with a 100. Other Falcons were Jersey Lessenger (102), Kyley Wagler (111), Victoria Briggs (122), Aly Ziegenhorn (134) and Jadyn Snyder (141).

WIBBEN, AMES ADVANCE IN 3A: Mount Pleasant's Samantha Wibben and Keokuk's Natalie Ames both finished in the top six of the Class 3A regional tournament at Edmondson Golf Course in Oskaloosa and earned berths in the state tournament.

Advancing to the May 26-27 state meet at River Valley Golf Course in Adel are medalist Kaylin Long of Washington, who carded an 81, Washington's Makenna Conrad (82), Wibben (90), Pella's Karsyn Lyons (90), Fairfield's Myah Twohill (92) and Ames (92).

Washington won the team title with 361 strokes and Lisbon was second at 387. Both advance to the state tournament.

Keokuk was third at 388 and was followed by Fairfield (394), Pella (399), Clarke (402), Oskaloosa (425), Carlisle (435) and Knoxville (461).

Mount Pleasant and Fort Madison had individuals entered.

Also playing for Keokuk were Chloe Ruhl (97), Heidi Rose (98), Anna Hinton (101), Kaylie Watson (109) and Allison Ames (114).

Fort Madison's Ellanore Wright tied for seventh with a 95. Mount Pleasant's Kylie Walderbach tied for 36th with a 108.

GIRLS SOCCER

MEDIAPOLIS 5, COLUMBUS/W-MU 1: The Bullettes breezed past Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union in a Class 1A, Region 8 quarterfinal match at Mediapolis.

Mediapolis (7-9) plays Davenport Assumption (12-4) in Tuesday's 6 p.m. semifinal in Davenport. Columbus/W-MU ended its season at 2-9.

WASHINGTON 3, CENTRAL LEE 2: The Demons ousted Central Lee in a Class 1A, Region 7 quarterfinal match at Donnellson.

Washington (10-6) plays at Solon (15-3) in Tuesday's semifinals. Central Lee bowed out at 10-5.

PREP BASEBALL

WEST LIBERTY 11, L-M 0: West Liberty blanked Louisa-Muscatine in a non-conference game at Letts.

L-M was limited to three hits, singles by Bryar Runnells, Chris Day and Ty Northup. The Falcons (0-2) play at Wapello Monday.

KEOKUK 8, VAN BUREN COUNTY 1: The Chiefs topped Van Buren County at Keosauqua.

Keokuk (1-0) hosts Centerville Tuesday. Van Buren County (1-1) hosts Notre Dame Monday.
