New London girls are fourth after first round in Class 1A state golf tournament

Taylor Phillips carded 82 strokes to lead New London High School into fourth place in the first round of the Class 1A state girls golf tournament at American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown.

Algona Garrigan leads with a 361 strokes and is followed by Grundy Center (367), Central Lyon (376), New London (378), Newell-Fonda (380), West Branch (395), Akron Westfield (398), Sigourney (400), BCLUW (412) and St. Albert (422)

The final round is scheduled for Friday.

Lynnville-Sully's Greenlee Smock is the individual leader with a four-over par 75, six strokes better than runner-up Madalynn Hornback. Phillips is tied for third individually with Bishop Garrigan's Annie Burns.

Rounding out New London's score were Sophie Malott (92), Emma Nye (100) and Saige Barron (104). Also playing for the Tigers were Emma Busby (118) and Stevey Wintermeyer (131).

CLASS 2A GIRLS GOLF

MEPO'S HINES LEADS: Mediapolis High School sophomore Olivia Hines shot an even-par 72 at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls to take the lead individually in the Class 2A state tournament.

The final round is scheduled for Friday.

Hines carded a two-under 34 for the front nine, then was at 3-under par through 12 holes. She then bogeyed three of the next four holes. Hines leads Molly Fereday of Waterloo Columbus by a single stroke.

New Hampton leads the team competition with a 348. Sumner-Fredericksburg is second at 357 and is followed by Williamsburg (361), Roland-Story (368), Dike-New Hartford (370), Van Meter (372), Treynor (382), Garner-Hayfield-Ventura (391) and Mid-Prairie (403).

CLASS 4A GIRLS GOLF

BHS's BRIGGS 12TH: Burlington High School's Lauren Briggs carded an 81 at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny and is in a four-way tie for 12th place individually in the Class 4A state tournament.

The final round of the tournament is scheduled for Friday.

Briggs is tied with Kayla Moline of West Des Moines Valley, Marley Richter of Cedar Falls and Cedar Rapids Washington's Jane Petersen.

Bettendorf's Shannyn Vogler is the individual leader with a one-over 72 and Marshalltown's Amber Henson is second with a 73.

West Des Moines Valley and Pleasant Valley are tied for the team lead with 325s. Marshalltown is third at 333 and is followed by Cedar Falls (344), Southeast Polk (349), Waukee Northwest (349), Western Dubuque (352), Bettendorf (354), Linn-Mar (362) and Ankeny Centennial (364).

CLASS 3A GIRLS GOLF

KEOKUK'S AMES 4TH: Keokuk's Natalie Ames carded an eight-over par 80 and is tied for fourth place individually through the first round of the Class 3A state tournament at River Valley Golf Course in Adel.

Gilbert's Eden Lohrbach and Newton's Rylee Heryford are tied for first place with 75s and Jaya West of Winterset is in third place with a 78. Ames is tied with Nora Carlson of Humboldt for fourth place.

The final round is scheduled for Friday.

Mount Pleasant's Sami Wibben carded an 88 and is tied for 16th place.

Gilbert leads the team race with a 348, 12 strokes better than Clear Lake. Dubuque Wahlert is in third place with a 376 and is followed by Lisbon (388), West Delaware (396), Washington (400), Humboldt (409), Solon (422), Sioux Center (427) and ADM (447).

PREP BASEBALL

NEW LONDON 4, CARDINAL 2: Kooper Schulte had two singles in three at bats and drove in two runs to lead the Tigers past Cardinal in a South Division game at New London.

The game was called after five and one-half innings due to rain.

Tucker Gibbar doubled for New London and Drew Benz singled. Seth Bailey was the winning pitcher. He gave up both runs, just one earned, on four hits and no walks in four innings. He struck out four Comets.

MEDIAPOLIS 3, W-MU/C 1: Kyler Crow went 2-for-3 to lead the Bulldogs past Winfield-Mount Union/Columbus at Mediapolis.

Aidan Danz was the winning pitcher, surrendering one earned run on two hits and six walks in four innings. He struck out seven. Ryan Ensminger tossed three shutout innings for the save. He allowed one hit and one walk.

PREP SOFTBALL

NO. 12 L-M 10, COLUMBUS 0: McKenna Hohenadel, Brynn Jeambey and Autumn Petersen had two hits each to lead No. 12 (Class 2A) Louisa-Muscatine past the Wildcats at Letts.

Piper Brant and Hannah Kissell combined on a two-hit shutout. Brant was the winning pitcher, giving up one hit and one walk in four innings. She struck out seven. Kissel pitched the last two innings and gave up a hit and two walks while fanning three.

Lily Coil and Susy Herrera both singled for Columbus.

W-MU 20, MEDIAPOLIS 7: Winfield-Mount Union scored nine runs in the top of the seventh to finish off the Bullettes in a North Division game at Mediapolis.

Keely Malone and Makiah Lower both singled, doubled and drove in three runs. Lower was the winning pitcher. She gave up three earned runs on seven hits and five walks in seven innings. She struck out seven
