Man dies after ‘falling into River Thames’ as temperatures drop below freezing

A man has died after reportedly falling into the River Thames on Monday night – as temperatures dropped below freezing.

The victim, whose identity has so far not been revealed, was “seen entering the water” near London Bridge, the Metropolitan Police said.

His body was recovered at 9.25pm, around four hours after police were first notified, the force added.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “Police were called at 5.33pm on Monday, 12 December, after concerns were raised about a man who was seen entering the River Thames near to London Bridge.

“Officers attended and carried out a search with support from the Met's Marine Policing Unit, City of London Police and the RNLI. Despite extensive, enquiries the man could not be found.

"At 9.25pm the body of a man was recovered from the water near to London Bridge.

“He is believed to be the man seen entering the water earlier. His next of kin have been informed. Formal identification is yet to take place.”

The spokesperson confirmed that the death is not being treated as suspicious.

The incident happened on the day many parts of the the UK were blanketed in snow, with temperatures dropping to around -3C.
