The New London Local Schools Community Fitness Center is now open to the public, following an open house this past Saturday.

The center was the weight room when the school was located on Park Avenue and is still used by the wrestling team. It is located off East Main St near the Dollar General. Work began on the building this past summer and was completed in December.

Athletic Director Susan Albaugh and Superintendent Brad Romano staffed the open house. Albaugh said although neighboring towns have a variety of fitness facilities, there was nothing for those in the New London area. Although the building is used during wrestling season, it sat empty most of the time and had space for another use.

The building has new lighting, three new weight racks and benches and new bars and dumbbells. The aerobic area has treadmills and other equipment, and the shower rooms have been rehabbed.

The wrestling team is using part of the building now, but once the season ends in March, that section will be open for classes.

Rates and hours

Monthly rates start at $25 for an individual and $20 for senior citizens and college students. For a two-person family the cost is $40 a month and a family of four pays $70. Seasonal rates are available. Hours are 5 to 10 a.m. and 7 to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Sports and protein drinks and bars are available for sale and the facility will be staffed at all times.
