NEW LONDON NOTES: Fair beginnings and endings for two young ladies

The fair season is almost over, school has started and life goes on for two New London girls, one near the beginning of her 4-H career and one near the end.

Ten-year-old Brooke Wuensch is in the fifth grade at New London Elementary School and is a member of the County Line Kids 4-H Club.

This was her second year showing goats, and in her age group she came in third in showmanship, third with her pack goat and first in the Goat Skillathon. She then went on to show the Grand Champ Senior Dairy Goat and Best Udder Dairy Goat, and to top it off was named Premiere Goat Exhibitor, based on her showing placement and participation.

Brooke’s long-time goal is to be a vet. She has a 3-year-old sister named Shelby, and they are the daughters of Amy and Jason Wuensch.

On Target 4-H Club member with a list of successes

Emily Stevens, 18, and a 2022 graduate of New London High School, is a freshman at Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa, Oklahoma, studying ag business.

She was a member of the NL FFA and earned her state degree last year. She belongs to the On Target 4-H Club and will be allowed to show at the Huron County Fair one more year. Last year she had the Grand Champ Market Lamb and won the Sheep Skillathon for the fourth year in a row.

She competed in state competition that year and received Reserve Supreme Ewe Overall, as well as being named Overall Breeding Sheep Exhibitor.

This year at the county fair, she had the third Overall Market Lamb, the Reserve Champ Ewe and top sheep in the Senior Skillathon. At the Ohio State Fair, she showed the overall fourth place ram and was named the Outstanding 17-year-old Breeding Sheep Exhibitor.

In May she received the State Sheep Proficiency Award and is one of the top four state winners in the country, a highly prestigious accomplishment. She is in contention to be declared best in the nation, an announcement that will be made at the FFA National Convention in Indianapolis in October.

Her brother, Tate, also is a member of the On Target Club, and their parents are Nicole and Dan Stevens.
