Last March the board submitted a grant application to the Clean Ohio Trails Fund program of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for $436,000 for trail construction. A decision on the grant is expected soon.

This money would be used for Phase I of the three phases planned to complete the trail. Phase I would improve 3.3 miles (roughly half) of the trail with improvements extending from the end points in New London and Greenwich.

Phase II would complete the 3.2 miles of trail in the middle with the exception of the area near U.S. Route 250. Phase III would take the trail over the Vermilion River bridge and under U.S. 250, thus completing the trail.

New London-Greenwich Rail Trail fundraising campaign underway

The local match for the grant is $90,000 and a campaign is underway to raise that amount. Donations can be sent to New London-Greenwich Rail Trail, Inc., PO Box 36, Greenwich OH 44837. Please make a notation on the check that it is for the grant match.

Membership in the trail group is $10 for an individual, $15 for a family, $100 for a business, and higher amounts for other donation levels. For more information, go to www.newlondongreenwichrailtrail.org on line or email President@newlondongreenwihrailtrail.org.

Work sessions on the trail are scheduled for the second and fourth Saturday of each month. Volunteers must be trail members. Contact the email mentioned earlier concerning the work sessions or to be added to the email list.

Monthly meetings alternate between the basements of the New London and Greenwich United Methodist churches, with the next one scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb.22 in New London. Everyone is welcome.
