New London to put 3-mill parks and rec levy on May ballot

NEW LOUDON ‒ The village has begun the process of putting a 3-mill levy for "park and recreation purposes” before voters this May.

Park Supervisor Joe Thomas said the levy would be used to upgrade park bathrooms and pavilions, improve ballfields, pave the Hileman Building parking lot and other purposes.

The levy would produce just over $100,000 annually and cost the owner of a $100,000 home $105 a year.

Seven new seasonal campsites are being added to the Reservoir Campground, Thomas said. He thanked the Firelands Electric People Fund for a $5,000 grant that will help repave some of Recreation Park roads.

He said Breakfast with Santa was successful and thanked everyone who helped with the event.

In other action:

  • Administrator Shawn Pickworth reported the water plant and processes passed an Ohio EPA inspection.

  • Council is ready to implement the gas aggregation program. A public hearing is being scheduled for Jan. 9.

  • Council passed several routine budget ordinances and finalized one renewing the contract with solicitor Steve Bond.

  • Mayor Toby Thomas congratulated the Community Club and everyone involved in a successful Hometown Holidays.

  • After an executive session, council gave the police chief permission to promote an officer should he choose to do so.
