New arrivals to the zoo in the past year included Asiatic lioness Arya, and three snappy big-headed turtles which hatched in the reptile house.
Sumatran tiger Gaysha gave birth to a cub just before Christmas, bringing the tiger tally to three, the zoo said.
Three baby Eastern black and white colobus monkeys also joined this year's count after being born at the zoo in the summer.
Head zookeeper Dan Simmonds told Reuters the annual count is apart of the zoo's licensing.
The annual audit of more than 400 species will take almost a week to complete and the data will be shared with other zoos around the world.
