Lone Star Varsity Athletes of the Week: All Saints' Chloe Conover, Post's Steven Huff

Chloe Conover added to her game this year, and it's showing.

All Saints volleyball coach Levi Savage said she continues to improve as the team enters the playoffs. That was on display last week, when Conover had 10 kills, 17 digs and four aces in a win over Kingdom Prep that forced a first-place tiebreaker.

The Patriots won that one, too.

"I was really proud of her," Savage said. "She is our first server, so she did a really good job serving for us to start the game. It gave us some pretty good runs, momentum to start the sets. She also hit really well that game."

Conover is an outside hitter, but her improvement on defense has allowed her to become a six-rotation player this year.

"This year's been a big growth year for her," Savage said. "She didn't do that her first two years here at All Saints. She kind of just stepped into the role of being a six-rotation outside hitter and playing defense and passing. I think it's just a testament to her hard work and putting in the hours. I think it's starting to kind of pay off now as we move forward."

Conover is part of the reason All Saints has won 10 matches in a row as the playoffs loom.

"Our theme for the year is 'All In,'" Savage said. "We just wanted to be all in for each other and then all in for the Lord. Just kind of not being lukewarm. The girls are really starting to display that. They're starting to play together, just all-in in trusting each other."

Post football coach Michael Pittman knew Steven Huff was having a big game, but he didn't know it was as big as it was.

The senior ran for 333 yards and five touchdowns in a key 48-30 win over Hale Center.

"I knew he was having a good night. I really didn't realize that he had that many yards until after the game," Pittman said. "… He's been playing some pretty good football. He broke a few long ones last week. That was kind of what pushed him over the top."

Huff's performance gave him 538 rushing yards and seven TDs over the past two games. But he plays a little defense, too.

Huff made the move from linebacker to safety this year. After some early growing pains, the senior has settled into the role. He had five tackles (one solo) and six pass breakups against the Owls.

"That's been a big adjustment for him," Pittman said, "because at that outside 'backer spot, we're always asking him to be aggressive and in attack mode. Now this year, we've kind of had to gear him down just a little bit. He's got to be a little more cautious, take a little more time before he gets going.

"He's done a great job trying to pick it up, but it has been a big change for him defensively."
